Thats a very good article!!
Makes it look so easy. Its a similar process i used to polish my mags, except I used a buff wheel from a high school with a bolt through it and a drill. Works a treat, but can take some time to get the desired finish!
I would imagine to polish an alternator and some other bits with alot of corners would be tricky to polish up.

Yep that's how you do it - I like to use scotchbrite linishing stuff as well - then you can pretty much go from the rough casting to the 400 grit in 1 go.
And beware when doing the final polish with the mop wheel to hold on tight and be careful on corners or your newly polished item will be bouncing accross the concrete floor

How does everybody think it would go on trying to polish up an LC GTR Grill which is very thin metal and fragile?

When grinding/sanding, do you have to wear a really good quality respirator?
Or will a large hanky suffice?

My polished grill I did using techniques from the quoted site. It's not perfect, but I don't think it's too bad.

Here is my first serious attempt at polishing metal.

And the item after 1.5 hrs (nowhere near finished yet.)
Jeremy spends hours doing this stuff and I can see why.
I dont have the high speed buffing wheels and pads that Jeremy uses and the tools I used are in the photo.
I wasn't aware that Jeremy had left his high speed electric drill at my place so tomorrow I will dig that out and spend an hour or more using it.
As you can see I have only just touched the surface on this yet and have yet to complete one side, let alone the back side and edges.
It's a bit of fun though.

Half the interior in my daily is made from ally
Easy to work with but unless you keep the polish up to it it eventually goes dull - or you can clear coat it or get it chromed afterwards.

The water pump and heater motor covers are the latest. The Purple polish is getting a work out!
Note how the water pump has been de-veined before polishing - the ribs are missing
I think the polished water pump will suit the 253 I have, we are about to dress up it up and paint it before offering it for sale again.
More polishing being done tonight and we are working on the engine bay again tomorrow - Monday.

I had two 253's the EFI one sold, I still have the mildly warm 253 that came with my car and it has only 28k on it. It was poorly painted so I have half stripped the paint and now it looks awful hence it is being dressed up as it is a far better engine than it currently looks. And no the polished water pump has been run and probably wont be until the engine is sold and gets installed. I have seen polished water pumps before and have heard of no problems but should there be any chance of a problem I will include the orginal water pump as well as the polished one in the deal.
