UC steering arms. What the?

I pulled the steering arms off boy's UC tonight and put them side by side to see if the left one was bent in the bingle. The wheel wasn't hit in the accident but that doesn't mean it might not have bent?

What I believe I found is 2 different steering arms?

From what I've read, the UC arms are better as they keep the arm more inline with the rack, particularly on lowered cars. Is this correct? :huh:

I found that the height and contour of the arms are the same but the L/H arm is 10mm longer to the hole (see "A")

Are these the top secret A9X Bathurst arms that saw one longer than the other as Bathurst is mostly L/H turns? :blink:

The second pic are the 2 arms on top of each other.

Any explanations welcome!

Very interresting, can you clean them up and get the casting numbers off them?

The ride height of a Torana front end has basically no effect on the bumpsteer no matter what steering arms you use.
Another one of those urban myths which love popping it's head up. I can give you a much more detailed explanation if you want me to make you one of the initiated.

Dont UC have a different "drop" though? As in bent down lower than LX/LH?
These 2 arms are the same "drop".

Maybe a HQ-HZ Power steer arm (which are shorter than the man ones).

Cast Nos.
GM9928326 is the R/H
GM7249 on the L/H

I have HZ arms here and they are straight in comparison to Torana.

Maybe Sunbird had different arms?
Maybe the long one is UC and it's bent? :huh:
It came off the damaged side.

Looks like it has more drop in the pic to me. I would say exactly the same as Rory, one LH and one UC and ls2lxhatch's numbers back that up.

Why would the LH steering arms be a different part no. to the LX ones? I'd think they would be the same. I've read someone that L34 steering arms were different from standard LH ones.

Did LX with RTS used different arms??? :fool:

Does anyone know why the A9X arm has the threaded rear bolt on the steering arm like LH.LX,UC but uses the Kingswood stub which has nuts and bolts for both holes in the stub?

Bent a steering arm on an lx, replaced them with arms off a UC, steering was geared up considerably as a result(more turns lock to lock)..........won't do that again!

Not the best to mix and match, the UC ones are designed for different caster and place the tie rod differently.

does the a9x one have more of a drop to help with bump steer?

Yes, more so than the UC ones due to the different height of the HX style stubs

In a UC yes because they match up to the rest of the suspension

In a LH LX no because they don't match up to rest of suspension setup

I have a similar question so I thourt it best to put it here. I've always thourt that torana steering arms should be exactly the same but opposite to each other? But I haven't realy taken alot of attention to it befor. Because here's my problem I've got two UC steering arms here and there not the same. Like the bolt holes are in different positions and the tie rod hole faces are machined and bent differently so there definitely going to be in different positionsPosted Image . I do have another two pairs to reference from but there still in the cars so I just thourt it would be a lot easier if some one on here knew if it was just pore engineering from the factory or common to be like that.

forgot to add: That I also have a set of harrop steering arms and there exactly the same but opposite you know what I meanPosted Image .

Yes they should position the tie rod ends exactly the same side to side, sounds like you have a mismatched pair

I've got two UC steering arms here and there not the same.


Compare the part numbers on your steering arms with the numbers listed above. You won't be the first person to find mismatched steering arms on their Torana.

thanks for the reply 76lxhatchPosted Image . Thats what I thourt thay should be the same. The worry is there the right cast numbers AF1GM7249 LH and AF1GM7248 RH as ls2lxhatch posted.
I know it won't change enything but I'll put some pics up soon to show them. Who knows thay may have been teching a apprentice that day or some one was showing of with out jigs and there's just a bung one lol.
