Hi Guys,

Just wondering what width would be the go for 18" Simmons on a flareless LH. I was thinking 18x7" and 18x8" with 225/40 and 235/40 tyres.

What do you reckon?

I am not after the pro-street look, everthing must fit under the guards. (standard diff and stud pattern)

they should work pretty well, maybe go with a 245 or 255 under the back, it will take that easy with the right offset

According to the Toyo website and the tyre calculators I have seen a 225/40/18 requires a 7.5-9.0 rim and the 235/40/18 requires a 8.0-9.5 rim so you would probably want 18x8 and 18x8.5 rims.

You may also want to check if the rolling diameter of the tyre is legal in your state. The National Code of Practice has limits on how much the overall diameter of the tyre can be increased.

I have WA DPI approval for 215/40/17 on 17x7 and 235/40/17 on 17x8 rims rear. Both these tyres will stay within 25mm of standard track. Any larger on the rear and the clearance between the shock and the tyre is a problem for my car. This can be overcome by changing the offset but then the track would not be legal.

im running 17x7.5 all round with 235/40/17 on rear, which fit well, and 215/40/17 front, scrub like hell on the gaurds, will have to get a smaller profile soon.

The minimum rim width for a 235/40/17 is 8.0.

What backspace do you have on the front rims? Do you have standard stub axles?

I would love to know how the guy above can manage that. I have 17's on my LH but I am going to get rid of them because they rub on the front spoiler. I am going to have to finde some 16's or 15's that I like.

you can use a bigger diameter tire if you reshape the lower bit of the front guard. :spoton:

Yes, inner corner of the guards need to be cut back, same for spoilers. Turn wheel till it hits, scribe, then cut 5mm inside the scribed mark for some additional clearance. Have a look at flared front guards on the Torries, next to no front guard left. Nothing Mr. Tinsnips can't fix.

I had to do that to clear mine Yella, and that was with the 15's on it.

this is with 17x8 with 245/? front and rear

I could have had a 8.5 or even a 9 under the back, but would have gone narrower on the front, something like a 225 on a 7 inch rim

this is coming fron someone who had had the on a car, not just played with a net calculator and rang the DPI/RTA ect.

i think i will go for the HQ stud pattern, the LH doesn't have a front spoiler (and wont be getting one)

thanks for the pics, the wheels on the SLR look like 18's to me.

i think 18's will be the go.

i will try to post a photochop that i have done of the car

If you plan to order rims from Simmons then you have the opportunity to get the offset right so the tyres will not rub. The correct offset can only be determined by selecting the correct rim width for the tyre you want and measuring the car. Whether you want to keep the car legal or not is a personal choice, but it should be an informed one.

I would contact Simmon's and find out who they can recommend in your area to measure the car. The FR18 will cost around $700 a rim so it would be an expensive mistake.

what are the advantages of changing over the HQ stud pattern ? other than more wheel options ? is it really worth changing over for the larger brakes ? i will be getting custom wheels anyway

well, your nice big simmons will look a bit silly with pissy little torana discs on the front and equally pissy torana drums on the back.
when I had the bigger wheels on mine it looked heaps better with discs under the back wheels, you cant really see them in this pic, but you get the idea

i just had an idea! go to supercheap an get some of the fake crossdrilled discs that you see on Hyundai excels! :tease:

if you really want to upgrade down the track you can get bigger brakes in torana pattern anyway

yeah mate, the idea was to get something like the hoppers kit later on with the torana stud pattern.

cheers for the heads up on the supercheap idea !!! i need to pick up some fluffy dice and some NOS seat belt pads, so i will have a look when i am there.

do you reckon 225/40ZR18's (18x7.5" rim) will fit on the front without to many drama's?

Another thing, apparantly the centres for FR17 and FR18's are the same size, just the lip is larger.

Obviously 215/45ZR17's will be a better fit, but i dont want to order the 17's and later on wished i had ordered the 18's

if you rolled the guards and had a perfect off set than maybe.....but like i said i have 17's with 215/45R17 and they scrub around any uneven corner and like hell when reversing whilst turning. and my guards are rolled.
