Guys, obviously the T700 out of a commodore slaps onto the back of a Turbo pattern 308, why arent these more widely used.
I have a TH350 with 3.55's and it revs pretty high on the freeway, i wanna go to 3.9's to have a bit more fun, would a T700 built to handle be a better option with its overdrive for freeway runnign on the way home.

It would be a manualised, shift kitted V8 auto with a stall to suit.

Do they fit?
Are they not very strong compared to TH350 and TH400?
In regards to kick down, are they cable operated or electronic, how would the elec work on a 308.
Anybody know there gear ratios?
Anybody foresee some problems with this setup, or even have a T700 on board.

MAYBE I SHOULD USE THE SEARCH OPTION MORE OFTEN, FOUND LOTS
I FOUND MOST OF MY ANSWERS IN PAST THREADS, JUMPED THE GUN

Cheers

i think tink runs one?

kick down's are either elec or cable depending on age of box i think like new ones are elec.

I'm looking at doing the same later down the track JNR'. interestyed to find out the pro's and cons too. I have a very strong trimatic in the sedan but would like to have that overdrive in the hatch for long drives.
early boxes vn and vp I think are manually operated without a computer.

Are the older t700 without the computer manual kickdown liek the TH350, i hope its not cause it a pain in the rear in regards to the kickdown cable running off my gas throttle bodies.

My TH350 obvioulsy runs the mechanical kickdown cable and i dont have the cable hooked up right now because the throttle bodies open the opposite way to the carby, to make them work off my accell pedal, i need to have a longer cable made up to suit.

No-one has been able to give me a confirmed definate answer if not having the cable hooked up and manually downshifting or up-shifting is doing the box any harm...

Cheers

im running a t700 behind my 308 , had the gearbox built to handle around 500hp so they reckon, round $2500 , 2 years ago.. Need an early VN box or one with a cable kickdown which takes a bit to setup and get right. You will also need to run a non lockup convertor and thats about it. Running 4:11's and from mem around 2500 at 110kph which is pretty good.

Those revs are good for running 4:11s on the open road.
It's been awhile now so my memory might be getting hazey. I think I was pulling 4000rpm at 110kp with 4:11's in my Hatch. Ahh the symphony of pistons :D

Does the trans tunnel need to be modified at all to fit a TH700?

If all goes to plan this weekend, within a month or so the torry will have a VP 5L and TH700 behind it :D

Nup, the tunnel doesn't need any mods. I have a th700 behind my injected 5.0litre and there's tonnes of clearance.
Mine has an electronic lock-up torque converter as it's from a late model VP, this requires a cable to the ECU so make sure you get a non lockup one.
Other than that all should be fine, i have a B&M pro shifter which was a piece of piss to set up, works and looks a treat, just thought i'd let you know that's probably the easiest option regarding shifters.

Cheers,
Rhys.

Does the tailshaft need to be shortened?

The Kickdown cable should be connected as it can hurt the trans if not fitted. Universal ones can be bought from places like bursons but may have to ring a shop like approved transmission parts.

t700 can be strenghened but arn't a strong trans. for example the input shaft splines into an aluminium drum which break behind strong motors. t400 is much stronger but yea doesn't offer the overdrive

Can anyone answer me about tailshaft length?

i would say you would have to shorten the tail shaft because theyr a fairly long box and they fit quit snugg in an lc or lj. had to massage the tunnel a little for the tranny cooler lines on mine. i had to shorten the tailshaft a bit for it.
ill second the overdrive great box for cruising 0.84 4th gear! (im pretty sure)
