G'day,

I came across and brought these Mawer wheels the other day. Two 14"x10" and two 14"x8". They are in pretty good condition and just basically need a polish up. Anyway the actual steel rims are just painted in a rust proof primer. My question is what do you think i should do with the steel rims? i have a few options:

1, have them ceramic coated in a chrome look.
2, have them powder coated in a silver colour.
3, just have them painted. If this option is chosen what colour do you think they should be? As close to the polished centres colour or something contrasting?

Any ideas/opinions appreciated.

The original looked like a dull brushed aluminium look...either straight silver paint or 2Pak silver paint...dont chrome them.

Chrome?

Yeah well I suppose that could be option number 4. I haven't chased up the possibility of that option.

That option was at the top of my list I think Rory. This is because I saw an article on moffats blue and white coupe that ran mawers and the outer rim just looked a silver paint.

Go back to the PH3 in 1973 in AMC...I changed the tyres on the rims...memory says the rear were 15 x 10 Mawers.??..Look in Autopics...That was the first time I saw them in Group C and the earliest use of them on Proddy cars I can remember..They were fresh from the Mawer factory. The Moffat PH3 ran without the rear spoiler...that bit I clearly remember.

I reckon they would be quite at home on a saloon car, but might be a tad light for that treatment !!

Originally they were a simple plain aluminium finish centre and steel rim with no finish. Most teams just threw a coat of silver or black paint on them as the plain steel rims rusted up quickley. My personal preference was to leave the centres plain, so I coated them in aluminium colour paint and intended to chrome the rims however I could not get the sizes I wanted so I had the rims made from alloy to the sizes I wanted and the centres machined slightly to take a centre cap. Whatever you do, make sure you have a clean coating between the rim and the centre as aluminium centres and steel rims do not mix well and you end up with disimilar metal corrosion. Get them stripped and crack tested too as the centres were very pourus.

this is when I first bought mine !5x10 all round on slicks

They look good like that red, spose another option would be the powdercoat chrome alloy look.

They look pretty good now, and that polished alloy rim makes them stand out. The rims I have are in good nick so I may have to find out about the chrome option.
