Hello again members,

This rebuild is starting to give me the shits, what I now need to find is a Rat Trap suitable for my LX 308 with an Aussie 4 speed. There is one on e-bay that I am bidding on but with a few hours to go I feel that the price will skyrocket.

Have a lead on an after market one that is much stronger but I would really love to get the original, any helpers.

Thanks Mars

May cause some problems fitting to the pedal end?

I'd say yes, seems to have an extra bracket welded to it does'nt it?
It's the only pic of an original I have to show the differences between that and a repro

Thanks SLRMike Just checking, The top one looks right with the 2 holes but may not be genuine.

I asked because trying to work out what will work with the supra box as the one like the top doesn't.

Wonder if one like on ebay can be fitted with the lever part without the hook to suit the torana cable.

Thanks for the pics also they help a bit.

I recollect the HJ/X type bolting to the body/chassis rail to get the pivot, only ever seen one still attached to the car.

I suppose its up to the buyer to check these things first but on the other hand its advertised as a V8 Torana cable clutch setup and its clearly not, so is there a comeback through ebay of not making the purchase based on the fact the item is not as described? Personally I would ring ebay customer support, live chat they call it and discuss. If it was sold in a shop as described and it was not fit for purpose that is was the wrong part you would be entitled to a refund. Of course you can try a fitment and I may be completely wrong so in the spirit of the day, I'm sorry.

Part No CC102 suit Torana V8
Part No CC103 suit HJ-HX V8 sedan

I believe the 102/103 is the measurement in CM of the inner cable.

Rare Spares also have the cable, around the $75-$80 mark. Sorry dont know the part number.

In the first pic you will see how the 6 cyl clutch linkage bolts to the fire wall
Posted Image
You will note in veiw A the nut and bolt holding the bracket.

In the second pic you will see the V8 clutch linkage
Posted Image
You will note the same nut and washer and existing bolt on the firewall the same as the six.
From memory the firewall is double plated at this point with the exception of the hole you see in the second pic for the cable to run thru. This area is single skin firewall and if you look from the underdash you will see the 'cutout' section. It will be a matter of drilling or cutting this pre marked section/hole.

Hope that helps
cheers
Mike

thats exactly what i was after Mike. thanks heaps. mine was originally the 6 cyl setup with the pedal 'cable' going though the hole in near the steering column as pictured and could never work out where the cable for a v8 went. next time im out there i will look for the 'cutout' you mentioned. where abouts did you get your repro rat trap from?

thanks again,

had a look for this 'cutout' under the dash and couldn't see it. mine appears to be double skinned around that bolt/nut area.
also got the engine on the cross member for a trial fit up of the running gear today and bloody hell its tight around the drivers side! and thats with it all out of the car. anyway the idea was to check to see if the clutch mechanism (from HJ i believe) i had would fit and i can tell you it doesn't. it fouls badly on the extractor. also the extractor seemed to be quite a tight fit with the sway bar on the drivers side too. what could be causing this?

heres a photo of the rat trap:

can definately confirm that the half rat-trap setup i have pictured does not fit. everything was looking good until i checked the steering uni clearance. no way will it ever work. ive got no idea how that guy from ebay could claim his (identical to mine) was from a torana. anyway hope this helps.

cheers

The other way I have done this before is to use a mid HZ-WB or VB-VK all cable V8 bellhousing and a UC pedal and cable. Unfortunately Holden didn't build a V8 UC or they would have already made a V8 pedal like they did in HZ/WB and Commodore so you have to modify the 6cyl one to get full clutch travel. The hook on the UC pedal needs to be moved a little further away from the pedal pivot, about 10mm or so.
