More of a point of interest i'm throwing out there of what's getting done to my car that others may be interested in.

Dropped her off to brake shop to get a bit of work done that i can't do myself at home. Including a booster overhaul. Dropped it off with the booster that was fitted to the car, originally a lx 6 cylinder. With the car came a double diaphram booster that i knew nothing about.

Got a call asking where the original proportioning valve was, as i'd completely stripped the car for work to be done. I'd bought a master cylinder with the 2 kits i got from hopper's assuming it'd be fine to run the 4 wheel disc brakes. (Guys fittnig everything up say otherwise and after hearing what they have to say i really do agree)

Car is now being fitted with the back half of the double diaphram booster, with a modified pedal linkage, front half of a falcoon booster mated to a late model commodore master cylinder, which has built in pro-portioning valve and brake warning light.

Bit of a rant but i find i learn more from what others have done. Let me know what you guys have done with your brake setups as well.

All you really needed to do was use a commodore booster and cut 50mm off the rod that goes to the pedal and weld the Torana end back on, everything bolts straight up and shouldnt cost any more than $ 150. You will have to bend one of the lines to suit the new m/cylinder.Use a vk comm double/dia booster & wb mastercylinder, if you want the A9x look. ( square lid m/c.)

The standard Torana 1" bore master cylinder and proportioning valve will run the four wheel disc brakes, HQ or Hoppers. The only modification required is to remove the residual valve from the rear brake port on the master cylinder.

The standard VK Commodore master cylinder P10220 has a 23.81 mm ( 15/16" ) bore which is smaller that the Torana and Ford master cylinders. An engineer could knock this back due to the size of the bore. The Police VK Commodore master cylinder P10037 has a 25.4 mm (1") bore. I think it is also difficult to get stainless steel brake line fittings to suit the Commodore master cylinder.

Another option is to fit the front cover from a Commodore booster to the Torana booster and then use a Ford XD 1" master cylinder with integral proportioning valve. I suspect this is what you now have.

My brake guy felt that running the standard torana master with valve removed, as well as the standard proportioning valve required for rego would leave with poor pressure to the rear, but give the illusion of a great pedal still.

I believe the master cylinder being used will be from something like a vr commo, which was standard 4 wheel discs, and has proptioning valve built in as well as brake warning light required for rego purposes.

I think you need to find another brake guy. Make sure he fits a 1" master regardless of the donor vehicle.

What I plan on doing sometime next year is to use a 1.125" bore M/C with an aftermarket booster that has a much smaller outside diameter for extra clearance around the engine. This booster apparently offers more braking assistance and doesn't use engine vacuum to operate.

I thought already having a double diapragm booster in my car, all I needed was a WB master cylinder ( I think statesman, not 1 ton ) and WB booster. Take the front cover off the WB booster and use it to replace the cover on the Torana booster. That way, you don't have to cut or modify the pin.

I have just had my booster and master cylinder overhauled but have been given a new Master cylinder not the original one.
I took her out for a blat today and found that the rear brakes dragged only after a heavy brake application and would not release completely .Is this due to the residual valve in Master cylinder?
Where exactly in the rear of master cylinder is it located and how do you remove it?

It is the check valve and spring in this diagram of a front and rear drum brake master. If you remove the brake line and poke a paper clip in the hole you should be able to feel the rubber check valve behind the olive.

What model commodore did you grab the booster cover and master from, any part numbers?

Cheers

I did get told that the VN v8 commodore booster and master was a good substitute.
I also was informed that that the m/c came in 15/16" an 1" bore. The only mod was to overhaul booster and change the fork to torana. I also am running hoopers fronts and VN rears.

Dual Diaphragm Commodore brake boosters, VB to VR, will suit.
