Hey, just wondering if there is anything special you have to do when spraying a car Satin black acrylic to get that oldskool hotrod/ratrod/minitruck look... Do you still prep the panel the same way (say wetsanded up to 600grit) then spray the satin down... Do you still put down a clear coat or no clear coat at all? Obviously you dont cut and polish it after?
If there is no clearcoat what protects it from UV? will it slowly fade over time?
Any other special tips with Satin would be good
Oh also whats the difference between satin black and matt black?

Normal paint prep so it sticks and looks good.
Clear coat will turn satin to gloss.
Maybe matt black is what u want.

Matt clear coat won't turn the matt paint glossy, but why bother? Just put on extra colour coats.

The satin on my bonnet was just prepared the same way as the rest of the car however as you say you can't polish it afterwards or it will gloss up, so the paint job had to be spot on to get it right. I didn't clear it and if it gets the slightest mark you need to clean it straight away with just a wet clean chamois and don't rub and area, do an even wipe all over.

Satin will give you the sheen like the gem above and as red has explained like the bonnet of A9X, looks good IMO. Satin is just a varying degree of full gloss and any colour can have a matting agent added to give this effect.
Matt is at the lower end of this scale and will show marks etc as red has described above even more but IMO can be patch painted much easier to touch up.

go to your local paint supplier and ask for a flattening agent....i kid you not.....you add it to real black paint at a certain ratio and it will go on like normal paint but stay flat...it will also hold its finish unlike chassis black or GMH black and not wash off......either that or get a clear over base.....base coat and dont put the clear over it...
