Don't know the wire colours, just find the wires you are after withe test light. Can talk you through it if need being.

For a normal bosch relay these are the pins:

Pin - 30 - battery positive
Pin - 87 & 87a - to headlights
Pin - 86 - switch
Pin - 85 - Earth

The biggest issue to replacing the relay is it has to, latch on for high beam to stay on without holding the stork switch.
Spose their could be something out their to replace it, but i haven't seen anything, not that i have actively looked.

What do you mean?
The switch on the column stalk or floor switch is what changes hi/lo.
That's pins 87/87A isn't it?

Have you got the stalk switch or the floor switch for high beam?

Power from the switch goes to 86.

its a lx with stalk switch, thought the relay may be stuffed as it wont change from high to low, but reading between the lines it seems it may be the switch then???
something else to change before toranafest then....

Give it a bash.
The switch itself can be bought at Dick Smith........
No need to replace the whole stalk.

hi guys, the lx relay pictured above is a latch type relay and to my knowledge cant be replaced with a different one.it is highly unlikely that it is broken as i have yet to meet an auto sparky that has ever had to replace one,i 2 wanted to replace it with a smaller one,but no good.if you are absolutely sure it is broken, then a bosch authorized auto sparky will pull it apart and fix for you.i suggest you check everything else first.my pajero uses the same stalk system and made enquiries about fitting that relay but was told that it is in the stalk action and not the relay.in the torana all it does is move back to high beam, touching the signal wire and the relay then grabs a hold and keeps it there,un like a normal relay where power is supplied.the relay opens and close when power is turned off.there is black and white wire on the stalk, find them and touch them together at the plug where the stalk joins the harness.when you tuoch them and disconnect straight away the high beam should stay on,and again to go back to low beam.by black and white i mean the white wire at d on the plug and then earth it and they should come on.hope this helps.

The switch on the colom of the LX, powers the latching relay only.
1st time pulls the relay on and it latches high beam on
2nd time pulls the relay on again, this time it un-latches and lets low beam on.

LH floor switches are the actual high/low beam switch, no other relay in the circuit. (Same as all early Holdens)

UC stork has the latching switch on the inside end of the stork, from what i've seen thats what usually always craps out on them.

The only other car that i'm aware of that uses the same relay is the humble old Beetle (Beware of the older 6vdc ones though)

Worth looking around a VW wrecker.

It's not Strictly a Holden part, it is a Bosch part so they could sell it to any car manufacturer that wanted to use it.

i had an lh with a relay next to the horn one only on high beam circut.because the wires wre in the harness,i assumed it was standard and that the push of foot switch just provided power to the relay, then high beam, and another push to disconnect power.maybe this isnt so.if anyone has an early lh standrd, could they check this as i am curious to know.

last time I had the switch out I though it was push on/push off - but you're saying it is only connected when you have the stalk pulled?

It's a normally open micro switch

Actually it has 2 contacts, 1 NO & 1 NC, 3rd terminal is common.

NO is the one used.

I just opened my spare relay i'll make a movie showing the action when it's activated & post it soon.

Here tis

Each press on the top is the same as pulling the stalk switch.

The high/low is the right hand contact, the left/lower center is the latch.

But theirs more!
There is another contact on the side, its to keep the low beam on during the changeover, doubles up to flash the headlights when they are turned off.

So it's a trigger switch, not really a relay as such - well technically - You learn something everyday.

You could use the outputs from the original relay to drive 2 slave power relays.

Alot of work but the original relay would not burn out from high power lamps.

what the baron said is exactly how the auto sparky wired up mine up.i expected to pick it up without the original relay, but but not possible.they used the power out of the lx relay as power in the new headlight relays,so 3 in all for the lights.very effective,a few extra wires to hide.

Get a relay block and hide all your relays in that. There are some nice and compact ones about with covers and all.
It will be nice and neat in the bay, just gotta run all the cables from there - that might make it easier to hide if you put the block in the right place.
