Top bearing coming out of the cup and the plastic pins in the collapsable column are sheared off as well.

well good to kno someone knows somethin.. by the top bearing do u mean right up at the steering wheel? the whole shaft moves up all the way from the steering knuckle. does this mean i need a new column?

Cant come up from the bottom!
If it did the couplings wouldn't be attached to the rack anymore.
Has to be the top half of the shaft only.
Bearing is just under the steering wheel and is normally riveted in (Top edge rolled over)
You are lifting the wheel, bearing, spring, top half of the shaft & circlip up.
I'm pretty sure their isn't enough play for the whole shaft to lift that high and still be attached.
Could be wrong? but dont think so.

What he said...you can pull it out and redrill and pin the shaft or get a new centre shaft.

When/if you remove the shaft, take note and very important!!
They are plastic pins it has to be able to collapse in an accident.
Dont make it stronger with metal pins or split pins, steering wheels dont make good necklaces!

no it really moves up from the bent knuckle joint which sort of straightens the "bend" through the rubber grommet outside the firewall there and all the way up and yes the top bearing cup then. u can still steer with it out but its really floaty

So does the cup move away from the column too?

Can you take a pic?

The bearing in this picture has broken free from the housing. You need to push the bearing back into the housing and pin or glue it in place. This bearing is the only bearing that prevents the shaft from moving forward and back. You need to be careful not to collapse the steering shaft when working on it. The top half of the steering shaft slides inside to bottom half of the steering shaft. The only thing stopping the shaft from sliding is a small amount of plastic that has been injected through two small holes on the outer shaft.

Try this as a temporary fix.
Loosen the 3 bolts under the dash that hold the outer column to the dash.
Grab the outer column and pull it up so the bearing fits back into the column.
Re-tighten the 3 bolts.

you need a new coffee pot which is the bit which holds/houses the bearing at the top... unless you can remove/replace the bearing at the top of the column properley as from the pics it seems this is what has collapsed... also the retaining pins along the shaft should be looked at as well... hope this helps...

This is a picture of the column housing (coffee pot) with the bearing removed. When the bearing is fitted by the factory it is pushed into the housing and then the top of the bearing housing is bent over to hold the bearing in. To replace the bearing you have to knock the old bearing out which beaks off the top of the bearing housing that was bent over when the bearing was installed.

The new bearing can not be secured using the factory method as there is not enough metal to bend over. The new bearing must be either pined or glued into the housing. I do not see why your existing bearing can not be refitted using the same method.

If you are not comfortable with pinning or gluing then your only option is to buy a second hand part with the original bearing retainer in tack.

Just a useless comment, but I always refer to the 'coffee' pot as the 'honey' pot. Any others use this terminology?
