Fitting Commodore seats into an LX

I am currently having some VY Commodore seats recovered (herringbone and black) to suit my Tangerine Dream. ( '77 LX Sedan)
I know people here have fitted these seats before so can you please give me a detailed how to complete with photo's if you have any?
So far the only usable info I have is:
" still use adjustable rails but put in some flat universal ones, the curved Torana ones are near impossible to adapt to anything".
This info kindly came from 76lxhatch.
My mechanic would appreciate any info you can give us.
Cheers

Look through the back window from a distance to make sure they are level to the car before commiting to mods.

I think these seats were installed by someone here (they are the same style as the ones I have)

It would be great if this person could tell me what he did in some detail. BTW that;s a damn nice job, looks great. I will try to keep the golfball door cards though as they do look good

Also looking for comments and how to's from others too of course, I am sure a few have done this mod successfully.
Cheers

herne, just as a matter of interest and since your talking about seats and your desire to find an easier way to get in and out of your car. i was going through a catalog here in s.a. from a company in n.s.w. that has swivell cushions to put on your seat to make it easier to get out and in i suppose, they do quote ( for people with bad hips ) just a thought

Yeah thanks Mark, depends what they are, if they are anything like the Lazy-Susan idea that was around 20 yrs ago I can verify they are not particularly good.
I have yet to see a good practical idea though one must surely exist.

Now all that info above assumes that the HQ floor pan holes are the same as Torana. I suspect they are but not sure, maybe someone else can confirm?
As far as Torana floor pans and rails go, my comment as above stands. I put some aftermarket seats in my hatch, and used the universal flat rails that came with them. These rails are closer together side to side, needing larger brackets to suit the original holes in the floor but that actually makes things easier. At the front they sit almost on the floor, with a couple of flat steel tabs that are welded to the underside of the rail and have a hole for a short bolt to go into the floor pan. You could lift them a little higher than this as this is lower than factory but I found it very good as I don't hit my knees on the steering wheel any more! The original Torana rails as mentioned are curved, which makes up for the big drop in the floor pan behind the reinforcing part. With flat rails the brackets need to raise the rear of the seat to make up for this (several inches) but are otherwise a similar setup to the front. I used cut off pieces of HZ ute bumperette brackets (centre ones this time) that are a U shape of sorts with two feet so that the seat is supported both sides of each rail, only the outside feet bolt to the floor.
I can't find any pics of the Torana on my computer either, but will take some in the morning if you like. I hope you can follow at least some of my gobbledygook.

This one is also outside of driver's seat looking forward at the rear bracket:

You could probably make something nicer, I just used pieces of old bumper bar brackets as they were lying around and certainly fit the bill for over-engineering. The inside brackets are exactly the same (except mirrored), the seat is centred over the original holes in the floor pan.
Here is my diagram of how I adapted the VN-VS seats to HQ-WB (a bit higher res so hopefully you can read it):

Try this. Photos are of crummy Monza seats in my hatch - first pic is outside of driver's seat looking back at the front bracket:

Ahh thanks mate, that will be a damn good help. When and if we meet up I owe you a beer or three.

I got the story wrong too.... My mechanic wasn't so much worried about making up the brackets, it was whether the Commodore seats actually fitted into a Torry.
He now has a copy of the above photo showing the seats fitted.
Looking at your photo's and drawings it all started to make sense to me.
Jeremy filled me in today stating I had got the question wrong

I welded some 40mm square RHS (square tube) (notched at the ends to sit on top of the rails while keeping the flat base of the seats as low as possible) between the rails to match up to the holes in the bottom of the seats. The RHS had to be of similar wall thickness to the original rails and the bolt holes had to be sleeved.
This was acceptable to my engineer and I have them blue plated.
It seemed alot easier to me than sourcing new rails and modifying them to suit.

I purchased Commodore seats over 12 months ago which fit my physical frame... They are going in.

I'm all for you using the chairs that are comfy for you (that's why I chose the seats I did).
If you need I may be able to get some pics up, I've been meaning to get some pics of my car up on the site, this may be the excuse I need to actually get around to it.
Up to you, dude.

Just saying that you can use the original runners if you want, it's not that hard. It's just another option rather than modifying the Commode rails.

ahh thanks for that, I didnt properly understand and yes I am all for people showing me what they have done after all it will make life easy for my mechanic (I hope). Some photo's would be very handy if its no trouble.
jeremy spoke to my mechanic today and suggested he try and get some rails that can be electrically operated. They would be handy but I have yet to speak to my mechanic about them after all he has the job of fitting no matter what we decide on and no doubt he wont want to complicate his bracket making etc.
Its all good so please people keep the ideas, drawings and photo's coming. We have at least a week before we might be looking at fitting these seats as they are in at the trimmers now.
Cheers

Hey herne, Craig has just put VE seats into his hatch. The tinyest of mods needed, a little welding and 1 drill hole to each seat and they bolt up to the existing floor holes. Took him a couple of hours total and that includes all the electrics the seats have. Im sure your bases are similar.
Hi mate thats excellent news

What happens to the side airbags in a case like this?

edit: if you bought them from someone who half knew what they were doing, they are probably already disabled (like steering wheel ones are supposed to be)

That pic you put up earlier does look sweet, especially with all the matching SS gear.
I'll still try to get the pics of mine up if you want them, but it sounds like you're going down a different path.
Either way, best of luck!
