hi all, just cut the extractors out of the torrie and found a heap of play in steering linkage, most of it in the pin going into the lower uni joint(lower end of splined shaft). i remember reading about someone on here having a problem with the rarespares one not lasting long? has anyone else had this experiance or should i go a head and buy them,34 bucks each from rares. lower steering column bearing is shot to, i guess the 6205 is the best replacment rather than the rares one.
any feed back appreciated.
cheers wombat

try a bearing shop first, they may stock something the same size, failing that try your local Bicycle shop, see if they have anything the same size, failing that, fork out $34 for a 50c cotter pin

Now that asking price is ridiculous in my book, surely if that is their price and I believe it is, it certainly needs reviewing and I am a big believer in Rare Spares :)

I'm sure I remember someone saying these were extremely poor quality and very soft?

I've found with genuine ones that if you tighten them, then jiggle the steering, you'll get another turn or so out of the nut.

This is the part number for the GM cotter pin 91107960 the Rare Spares one comes from the same manufacturer, get a price from the GMH dealer first. As far as I am concerned we have the same quality and a cheaper price

Hi Les.
Firstly may i say how much i value rare spares in their filling a gap in the market for the parts needed for our cars.
In fact , i have parts on back order as we speak. (hurry up LH mirrors :D )

Having said that, your cotter pins are crap and it would not surprise me if they contribute to an accident, sooner or later.

I am happy to send you one of yours, and an original which was last purchased from GMH Melville Motors mid last year. (4 of, they came in an amcap bag!) They are definately different to the eye and the feel.

I sent the worn one back, with a letter from a mechanical engineer, early last year. No response by the way.

That pin didn't last 2 days.

I strongly advise people not to use them.

I trust you will look into this and remove them from your line up, pending a review of your supplier.

Cheers,

Welby

Interesting read. I was about to purchase 4 cotter pins and a uni joint from Rare Spares. Sounds like the cotter pins are a no go for now. What about the uni joint? Has anyone had a problem with the ones from Rare Spares?

Welby
I have already started the procedure of looking into them; we will be in contact with the supplier on Monday. These are more than a two dollar cotter pin and from what I told should not have worn if fitted snuggly. Where did you send the worn cotter pin back to?

And you can bet Holden makes a pretty penny on them too at that price :)
I dont know whats involved in the manufacture of such an item but I have a vision in my head of some Asian company churning these things out at so many hundred per minute :) Agreed the number of runs might be limited.

I just made them my self, I used a grade 8.8 bolt mechined it down and taped a thread on one end cut of the hex head and ground a flat on one side I have no problems with strength issues, and now I have Power Steering the steering column doesn't have much load on it any more.

Hi Les.

I don't have the details at hand sorry, i spoke to the Osborne Park outlet and he gave me an address in the east. I have a note written somewhere in the build diary, but i've packed for moving sorry.

If it's important i'll go looking..
