hey has anyone used the gilmer belt drive setup for a 202? just wondering how good it sounds and if you can use the original fan or do you need thermos

I've never seen one using the original fan, only thermos. But I've seen some kits on cars, and it looks like the alloy spacer (LH-UC style) would fit straight on, so it may well work fine.

The Holden 6 'kits' that I've seen all use a fairly skinny belt, which obviously doesn't have as much of a sound as the big fat bastards they use on other vehicles

hey mate. heres a link to a gilmer belt drive system, engine sounds fairly stock. pretty sure its not on a torana tho coz its pretty large, maybe on a hq or hz. the skinny ones ive seen are probly better for an Lc/Lj torana but like heath said: they might make less of a "whistle" sound. these will sound sick on a torana but its gotta be backed up by a big cam too, so that it sounds like a really tuff ride. because of all the trouble of missing fans, thermos and if it will miss the radiator, have you considered straight cut gears that run off of the front of cam and crank? makes same sound, probly same amount of work. good luck with your research.

its for my wb tonner i have just built a medium engine for it. it has straight cut gears and you can hear them thats why i was asking how loud the actually belt drive setups are. thats the vid i have seen sounds alot louder than any gear drives

yeah i agree with heath about it having straight cuts. those ebay gilmer setups from the video use a 1.5 inch belt from memory, but you could fit a 2inch wide belt on there if you could get one.
my setup for the hd only has 1 inch wide pulleys and belt, thats all i can squeeze in there with the desert cooler radiator. you shouldnt have any space issues in a tonner though

edit* just had another look and the alternator pulley restricts you to the 1.5 inch belt, unless you can find a wider pulley for the alternator

How wide do you reckon this is? definitely the biggest setup on an unblown motor that I've seen.

thats the same kit from the video isnt it heath? im not sure why they make the other pulleys so wide? maybe they are the same pulleys used in other kits with wider belts

Yeah after looking at the video again, I think you're right. Agree with the second part as well

Yeah I have a similar kit here and the altnator pulley is 1.5" wide as mentioned before. They are pretty much universal as they have lots of holes so can probably be used with chevs etc as well.

They probably aren't that universal - I'm sure not all motors have the same rotating speed ratios between each of the driven parts.

dont forget whos selling them though... i reckon if it bolted on, they would class it as universal

Isn't there an issue with these having too small an alternator pulley so you don't get proper charge at idle (or something like that) or is this a different kit???

The ones with the smaller pulleys on the crank and water pump use the same size alternator pulley which underdrives it somewhat. All depends on your idle speed, alternator and charging demands - I have one with the smaller pulleys and its not a problem.

The tighter they are the louder they are and the sooner you have to replace your water pump or alternator.

Pretty big wank factor, probably second highest to a crane cams sticker on the rear window.

I would say you wouldn't get much volume from it... and honestly the more volume you're getting, the quicker your belt is gonna wear out, lol!

If your car is a bit of a performer then underdriving the alternator may be favourable, but I wouldn't say it's the way to go for any streeter. Easy to check if it's doing its job at idle, but if you get that far you've probably already spent a few hundred bucks haha

The only real question, is why??

Agreed with Heaths statement.

That youtube vid convirmed it.

We have a totally standard 202, you can tell its bog stock by the sound (if you listen past the whistle) with a stupid fake whine that does absolutely nothing but irritate people.

Cheers.

Bling!
A gift for the engine that has everything.
Or it could be the first step to fitting a super charger???

But I fail to see why you would want one on a standard engine, surely that money could be better spent on a real go fast bit.

Yeah I'm not hugely into them either but if it's gonna make the owner happy, let him do it. They definitely look nicer for one

Sure a cam sticker is kinda bogan but who gives a f*ck. Come and spend some time where I live in gook central and you will find out what a shithouse car modification is. How about little plastic fake exhaust pipes glued onto the side skirts of a Daewoo Matiz? Live and let live

i got mine just for the looks, same reason i spent a stupid amount on an alloy rocker cover and other shiny bits. if i wanted a bit more of a whine i would just drain the oil out of the gearbox.
