Where do I start. I am trying to collate any info on ex holden police cars especially pre 1974. So what I am asking is if anyone has any info about them or knows someone with any info no matter how trivial post it here. Things like handcuff railing bolt holes drilled into rear floor pan, id holes behind dashboard etc anything you have heard is great. Thanks in advance Dave.

I know there is some info on this site already but it seems to be spread out everywhere a little bit here and a little bit there. I am trying to get it all on the one thread plus any new info that may come to light. Cheers Dave

The victoria Police Museum has a book on old cop cars - There was a little article in an AMC - It may of actually been a book on the Victorian Police Motorsport club history. I can't remember exactly. Contacting the relevant state police museums would be a good start or even all the forces Highway units. They might be able to help you.

some years ago, like before a lot of you where born most likely lol,i was in Melbourne,i stopped at a car that had a row of about 6 yellow XB falcon sedans,on further inspection i found out that they where ex police candy cars.
From memory they where GT specked cars and all had brand new heads on em,reason being the cops run something special, they still had all the mounting holes for all the police stuff, and the price was $5,000 other than that its too many beers ago to remember much

NSW Police vehicles in the 70s and 80s were pretty much identical in the accessories that were fitted. All had registration expiring in March, had the following accessories as standard fitment:

driving lights
mudflaps
drivers side weathershield
sunvisor

The pics are a couple of cars I used to drive and show the layout from the early 80's, these are both HWP cars with 5.0 litre V-8's which unlike popular myths, were bog standard. The interior shot of the VH shows the Police speedometer which was fitted to all HWP cars as well as the the Motorola radio.

This is the sort of stuff I am after keep it coming.I didn't know a lot of the things you have mentioned surfmaster or the places to contact concept ss. I have also been told that the
*police cars had the aerials mounted further forward
*XU1s were ordered without the bobtail so they looked more standard
*holes drilled behind the dash fascia for police id tag
*Hole in the passenger side firewall to run the poser supply in for the radio etc possibly direct poser from starter motor?

Please feel free to ammend or add like I said keep it coming intersting stuff.

Cheers Dave

There were changes to Police vehicles later in the 80's, I am unsure of the exact year, but the registration expiry was changed to 30 June and it hasnt changed since then. The mudflaps, sun visor, weathershield and driving lights dissapeared from fitment, most likely as a cost saving issue. The rego expiry was changed to bring all Government vehicles into line with the financial year. Air conditioning was fitted to Police vehicles commencing around 82-83. Police vehicles had additional wiring to operate the Police radio, lights and sirens. HWP vehicles had special shielded cable for the radar powr plug. The checked speedometer was done away with around the VL or VN Commodore time and the factory speedo was tested and used instead.

G'day Dave

These have been on the forums a long time ago but here they are again.

NSW Tarcutta Highway Patrol (note GTR grille badge is on the top of the centre bar, obviously put on there by mistake when being assembled)

Very dark LC GTR but still has side stripes

Sorry mate but you're booked :badabing:

Posted Image

NSW LJ GTR maybe from Wagga

One thing to note is that the mudguard aerial was mounted approximately 45cm forward of the normal position and I think this was for the LC/LJ Toranas but not sure if it was done on other models.

You can see it on the LJ and the dark LC GTR.
Also note how close the rego plate numbers are on the 2 LCs.

The Police ID tags on these cars were mounted under roll of the dash beneath the glove-box so there should be 2 drill holes about 40 or so mm's apart.

A few unfortunate pics of police cars here
http://www.gmh-torana.com.au/forums/index.php?showtopic=43206

A bit of Torana Trivia, the first report on the suitability of the LC GTR Torana as a Police Pursuit Vehicle was done here in Cootamundra by a fella I know that has now retired from work.

Unfortunately that report was thrown out after 4 years.

No doubt there is more info out there on how to ID an ex-Police car.

Regards ... Barry

My Lj Sedan had an aerial in the same spots as above. Does this mean it could possibly be an ex police car and are there any ways to tell?

Have a look in Street Machines 'click & drag' section. [maybe 2 issues back].
I'm sure there is a link to a site of old police cars.

My "Best Man" at my wedding was a Highway Patrol cop and when he was driving the Chargers he took it for a "run" to see what it would do then he took off the sunvisor and got an extra 5mph faster but he said the front was floating around and was too dangerous at that speed with or without the visor.

He only did that once.
