Hi all

Just took a grinder to the torrie only to find lots of cheese under the bog at the front screen...

Just looked on the rare spares site and they have a rear screen repair section available. Would this work to fix the front as well? The rear is not as bad but if I need to do something drastic to the front, I may as well do both.

Has anyone done this fix on their LC/LJ or can suggest a method to repair?

Would lead loading work ok with so many holes and rough metal?

What about getting under it to treat after the fix?

Any help would be great!

Thanks

Hi Eric

I've done a little bit of lead work and i would say if there are holes that go right through the scuttle panel i would braze them up first then either lead it or bog it with glass fibre bog or or or....remove it and replace it with a better one however you'll need to remove the guards if you choose this method good luck

Thanks 2runa

Yes, I have been told to braze it but I think there is too much rust there....very thin. I have ordered a rear repair section from rares and I hope that I will be able to use that for my repair. I too believe that it should come out rather than patched.

What are the chances of me finding another section better out there? none I reckon... The only concern I have is that there is going to be little metal for welding to due to the vent/grill things there... I'll wait till the section comes and have another look at it then. And yes, I dont fancy taking the guards off so my plan at this stage is to cut and weld...

I have read a few threads on here of guys that have done repairs on LH/LX so lots of info here. I was just wondering if anyone has had a go on their LC/LJ.

Watch this space I guess and will see how we go. Any help would be great..

Thanks

I bet if you cut a piece of that out which gave the profile you could get a sheet metal worker to make one up just the same,

i would unpick across the window-dash frome then gentle grind the pointer lip on the scuttle and re-make that part then re-weld back across that lip, you can always serves from the hole where the heater fits.

or im told these panels will be aval just after xmas from me or amc parts, so why dont you just wait,, or you can always make your own, but the back window section want be any good to you as there way diffrent.

cheers gong

Hi all

Well, here is my cunning plan so far... unpick along the screen and cut along the lip above the vents as gong suggested...

I just got a couple of rear window repair sections, one to try for the front and one for the rear. I was thinking to flatten or cut the lower lip and it should end up the same profile, and it did...

The plan is to bend/shape the bit I flattened (sorry for the tech big words.... :blink2:) and to bend a lip in it so it will go under the metal left there after the cut. Then, I could drill and spot weld the section in there as well back along the screen lip......

Not sure if that makes any sense but I will post pics.... :)

Still at it... slowly. Cant rush these things.

I spoke to a few people and looked around and decided to rip the plenum lid off. A bit scary and I'm sure you folk will tell me how I should have done it but hey, may as well give it a go.

I'm glad I went down that track cause if I tried to weld the holes, I would not of had a hope in hell! The metal was so thin!! Pretty happy with what I saw inside though! :buttrock:

Anyway, I'll keep going with getting the repair section fitting properly and get more pics when that is done.

Cheers.. :3gears:

Hi all..

Due to lack of time, skills and equipment, I have just dropped my Torrie off to a guy to do the rust repairs and paint.. After shopping around for prices, it was hard to find someone in the real world to give a realistic price... He gave me a great price but Im sure the end result will tell me if its a good or shit job!

I will keep you posted and put some pics up as we go... he reckons 6 to 8 week turn around...

Cheers

:3gears:i was gunna suggest sumthin else but too late now, you were on the right path with patching , replacing ithe whole thing is a huge job

i have seen ome cut off but short on each end through the last vent slot near the guards then a replacement one of another car chrome plated then welded or blind riveted back on! welded would be stronger but

its the only one i have seen like this and it actually looked pretty good

also rust proofing must be done from under dash and inside plenhimwere the heater hole under the bonnet!

and 6-8 weeks ?he works like me slow and steady!

anyways good luck
