Not sure if this idea has been talked about before, but thought I'd toss it out just incase! (was looking through some pics of my car build earlier for something else, and remembered about this..)

My bonnet springs had been painted a few times over and I really wanted to paint strip them before giving them a fresh coat of satin black. Couldn't really figure out a good way to get inbetween all the coils though properly ?

Then an idea hit me....using my floor jack, I hooked the spring around the axle and around the upper cross pin as you can see in the picture (the picture is before I had spread the spring open by jacking), then just jacked up the jack and it spreads the bonnet spring open! Just sprayed it down with paint stripper a couple times and that got it perfectly bare, then just rubbed it with some scotchbrite and then thinners last up and finally hit it with some primer and then black.

After it dried just released the jack and pulled the spring out. Came out perfect! Put them on the bonnet hinges and as you open and shut the bonnet now and look at the springs you always see a nice tidy surface.

(also stuck in a couple pictures of the hinges, one as it was, and the other after I stripped it, sure came out nice!)

Don't have any shots handy of them all finished closeup, so just added a couple that sorta show them at least.

Excellent Idea - I am nearly up to that stage myself.

How did you get them back to bare metal.

cheers - Jim

Mate my whole theory with my car is if you cant see it it looks good.

Like my wiring, messy as frOck and looks like a 4yo did it, but its all hidden so it looks good.

And my undercarriage, not pretty....But because my car doesnt do massive wheel stands yet the only people who see it are me and the people might i run over.

Same with the bonnet hinges when the bonnet is closed.

Cheers.

Ha ha...just noticed this morning I should have named this thread "painting bonnet hinge springs" since that is mainly what I was aiming at helping, but that's ok, the idea worked obviously.

And glad the floor jack idea can help a few guys out!

Oh, and the strip them I used liquid paint stripper....worked great. Just gave them a quick rub down with a scotchbrite pad and thinners when I was done to get any other film that could have been left from the stripper.
