Hi Brendan

AFAIK nobody makes a replacement bush.

How bad is the wear, like how much slop do you reckon there is between the bush and the shaft??

its faily floged out, 1mm or more i guessing?

if its the same shaft as the LX/LH toranas i can replace it with bearing 6205-2RS-1. this is a 1inch bore fitting on the shaft and a 52mm outershell.

Nope, LJ steering shaft is not the same as LH - LX.

LC - LJ bush is .770" internal Dia, the OD is probably similar.

Go to a bearing shop and ask for a case roller bearing with the same inner and outer diameter, a hose clamp should hold it or glue it in place with appropriate glue.

A roller bearing would need to be less than .770" ID to be a snug fit on the steering shaft.

.770 inch is 19.5mm

how much less are we talking? and i doubt you could even geta bearing in this size. will probably just have to get one made up. any special kid of nylon?

I would use acetal rather than nylon.

Harder and self lubricating but very nice to machine.

So the LC's don't use a roller bearing? just this plastic bush?

there wouldnt be a problem using nylon though would there? what about brass, even aluminium?

cant imagin LC having a roller bearing and LJ have a bush.

anyone got a rought idea on cost to machine this up?

LC and LJ use the same bush.
I'd stick with a plastic like nylon or the Acetal that Toranamat69 mentioned, if you consider having one made up.
As for price to make one, no idea really, maybe $100.00.Could be cheaper if you can drum up orders from other LC-LJ owners and get a batch made.

G/day Brendan

Measured my NOS bush. (sorry not for sale).
OD = 2.050" (52MM give or take a mick hair) not including the flange.
ID = .770" (19.5mm as you calculated)

Measured a spare steering shaft.
OD of shaft where it runs in bush = .748" (allowing for a bit of wear may have originally been .750")

My calculation is that the factory tolerance between bush and shaft was .020"

Basically though if you do get one made just give them your old one to copy and have the hole in the centre machined to .770" dia.
I think using a self lubricating plastic would be a great advantage in extending the life of the new bush.

Cheers
Dave.

G/day Brendan

Try this mob in Sydney - All Plastics Engineering.
The Cast Oil Filled Nylon 6 sounds promising

what is the difference between a column shift and floor shift bearing? are they interchangable?

Hey Cavan

The lower column bearings are different for column shift and console shift. Basically the column shift bearing has to also accommodate the gearshift shift tube as well as the steering shaft.

I don't think they are interchangeable, but not really sure.

Cheers
Dave.

Bringing up an old thread,

I believe the lower bush in my steering column has compeltely degraded, there is about 2cm movement either way (so 4cm in total) at the end of the column rod.

Pulling it out on the weekend, but would a bearing be the most practical method to solve the problem?

Im sure I could find one close enough to fit, bit of machining wouldnt be too painful.

i converted my ex column shift to a floor shift, all i did was to cut off the section where the shift lever come out on the column and machined up a housing and fitted a nylon bush inside it

You could use the same roller bearing as the LH/LX and just use a 3/4 to 1" adaptor like this http://www.smallpart...stension/all/1/
