Hey guys, wanted to weld on some -10 fittings to this catch can which was just a el cheapo stainless one... fittings were mild steel and was using 316L filler rod with the TIG, cleaned the can and fitting with carby cleaner and put a few tac's down... straight away it didnt go well, So I thought maybe i should grind the surface a little... and then went to lay a bead but was just going shit. Stopped and had a look at the start of the weld had cracked already. Gave the fitting a little tap and the whole thing ripped out :S

Mmm so yea what went wrong? was it just a crap quality stainless, or did I maybe not clean the inside of the can enough (I had let it soak in my parts washer for awhile and flushed it with water after)

Pretty sure you need ER309 grade wire.

That can looks chromed.

Check the catch can with a magnet. If the magnet doesn't grab onto the can then it is the good quality austenitic stainless steel.
If the the magnet grabs onto the can then it is the cheaper imitation crap they pass off as stainless steel.
Getting harder and harder to find products made of real stainless steel these days.

The The metal in those chinese things is porous and very low grade.... It's barely 304 grade stainless. My guess is you were using the wrong gas (or possibly not enough flow) or electrode type by the look of the contaminated weld bead. Straight Argon is the go. Argoshield or other CO2 mixes will make it go extremely brittle.

Using straight Argon, 2% thoriated Tungsten.

its not Brass, Mild steel -10 fitting just went that color from the heat

Magnet doesnt stick to it. I thought maybe it was chrome which was why I tried grinding around where I was going to weld.

I did some stainless to mild steel welding not long ago with the exact same setup and got Really nice welds :S

The can does feel extremely light even tho its about 2mm thick walled.

Im leaning towards a combination of both a little oil left inside the can and poor quality stainless... Time for my mate to get a decent quality one or ill make one from scratch

Dont forget you used the wrong filler rod, too.

This might sound dumb, but its not polished aluminium is it?

I reckon you might have hit the nail on the head there Wot! Now you mention it I have seen that done in the past. I myself have picked up a stainless filler wire while welding ally and the result was similar.... It's probably chrome ally.

You can chrome alloy? Learn something new everyday.

I did think maybe it's alloy but I've worked with alot of polished alloy and it just didn't look like it and did look more "stainless-steely" but if you can chrome it then very possible it is.

How could I test? Grind a section back to the bare base metal and try weld to it with some alloy rods?

Oh and when you said I used the wrong rods wot, do you mean because it's alloy or should I not use 316rods even if it was stainless :S

When welding mild to stainless you should use ER309 rods.

Chrome plated alloy wheels were available last century. So it's not all that new.
