if your using a presure pak im pretty sure you just ask for GMH Red engine enamel, mmost paint supplies shops would have the code when getting a pressure pak made up..

You can't get the original Rocket Red anymore, James at Monaro Muscle parts used to be able to mix it but not anymore (lead content from memory). Power Plus made a pretty good version of it in a pressure pack, not sure if it is still available either.

Not 100% sure but rocket red MkII i believe is the mix you want as rocket red is the darker red like the early holden red motors.

aldo,

Mate. Did you buy volcana orange and used it, and it was close to the original rocket red. Or did you buy the rocket red and it was close to the original rocket red. !!!

aldo not trying to be a smart ass just having trouble following you information.

What brand was the can which had the color you are happy with, aldo.

If you have come up with the right color aldo, to the original rocket red we all owe you a carton......walkinshaw

I found Power Plus Rocket Red PP438 to be close. Made in Australia by Kelray Pty Limited, 3 Kelray Place Asquith. There are phone numbers for them on the 'web. As far as I know this is the closest you can buy for HK-HZ/VB red motors and HK-HQ Chev engines.

walkinshaw hi bought a can of VHT sp119 rocket red and tested on a untouched 202 engine and the colour was pretty good given the age of the 202 i cant find a v8 that hasnt been painted

as for the volcano orange i had to order it as it was not in stock, ill be picking the can up tomorrow, i wasnt sure if rocket red went up to the lx toranas, i thought the lx engine was another colour

does any one know if its listed in the LX parts catolouge, any help would be appreciated

regards aldo

HJ onwards will look a little different in the engine bay as the engine and all metal in the engine bay was painted in clear lacquer. This will be why LX looks slightly different to earlier LH.

hope this can help, some advertisement pictures from the day.

looks red,and a red orange,i have many engines here but most have been repainted that orange colour that is very common,i have looked at several unrestored red motors here, and the colour has turned a horrible pascal type of colour, nothing like these pics,i think oil has soaked in and changed the colour.

That early LH Torana engine picture (2nd down) that Craig put up is pretty much right for the PowerPlus colour. I'm not sure if early LH had the clear lacquer applied that started in Holden with HJ. It does gloss it up a fair bit when you look at an original engine and compare it to a HQ 253/308. Note that all of those engines are display engines too, there is no overspray on alloy parts or paint on the exhaust manifolds like the production stuff had.

Many of those earlier brochure pics are a bit misleading, especially the EH ones. Those are drawings, not photographs.

AFAIK there are 3 different 'reds' used on Holden engines. This is in addition to the commonly available Chevy Orange, which was not used by Holden.

The colours go like this:

1. EH, HD & HR (not X2 or S) engines were painted Holden Special Engine Red.

2. HD X2 & HR X2 & S were painted Holden Rocket Red

3. HK to HZ, LC to UC (6 & V8) & VB Commodore were painted HK Rocket Red

No. 1 was a darker red, much like the 2nd EH pic in the above post.

No. 2 was a brighter red, closer to 'Fire Engine Red'

No. 3 was the common one in the above post & contains an orange tint.

Chevy Orange was more 'Orange' yet again.

This is a freshly painted Chevy Orange motor.

I found the chevy orange to be pretty close to some unpainted parts i had left over.

The VHT reds looked too red to me. All up to the individual i surpose.

well if you see this post its a bit late but if you ever paint one againe the origanal colour for holden red motors 186 202 253 308 and 350 is HOLDEN ORANGE
CHEVY ORANGE is for American Blocks
Alot of guys use HOLDEN red or GMH red but its not for early modle engines
