Hi,
As the title says I have a LC Toranawith a Trimatic gear box with a V8 blah blah blah. Anywho I have fitted an Autometer Electronicspeedo. I have the little adaptor unitwhich wires to the gauge but what do I do to connect it to the gearbox? Do I get a standard speedo cable that will fit atrimatic?

Then how do you calibrate it or do I haveto get my dyno tuner to do that via the computer?

Your help would be great folks as imstuck and no one at the shops that sell you this stuff will help me

If you want to run an electronic speedometer, off of a transmission with only a cable outlet, you could use something like this...

If you've lost the drive key, instead of ordering an entire thing...I'd shoot Autometer and email and would imagine they would be able to sort out something for you to get it on it's own.

And yep...just screw it onto the speedo housing where your cable would go. (assuming the trimatic uses the same threads as a Yanky box ?)

If you want to get really modern, Classic Instruments sell a GPS based module, called Sky Drive that connects to any electronic speedo- no hook up needed to gear box, no driving a km/mile to calibrate the speedo, no stuffing around with gears because of different wheel diameters. These will be the way of the future!

The unit can be hooked up with a little as three wires including one that gives a permanant power supply

If I had known about these before I would have saved alot of time and money on my hot rod. I had a custom cable made that came out the side of the box hooking up to a pulse generator (cost $300) and I still can't get my speedo to work. The sky Drive can be mounted anywhere that is not exposed to weather and saves all the other agro associated with calibrating a speedo.

Cost is about $260 for the Sky Drive unit.

The only issues with the GPS based speedos is they don't work in tunnels and in theory are their most accurate when travelling at a constant speed along a straight and dead flat road. The error wouldn't be too much, and would reduce with an increased refresh rate. A 5 Hz refresh rate is as good as anybody would need.

Here is a quote from Street Rodder magazine Dec 2011 (american mag which I get via subscription)

"The sky drive has an omni directional antenna, which allows you virtually unlimited mounting options. It updates it's location 10 times per second, making it twice as fast as many of the after market GPS units". Yes the article does mention that the only downside of the unit is going through tunnels but i reckon I would be lucky to drive through tunnels a couple of times a year (have you noticed that a tunnel is usually associated with a toll?) so i'd be more than happy to have one of these in my car.

It should be noted that both Mercedes and BMW are starting to use GPS speedos in their car. There is a truck mob in Mc Graths Hill, Sydney NSW that has been using these for a while with great success.

thanks

I use a conversion box to go the other way around...electronic transmission to factory speedo... it takes the signal from the trans or PCM and converts it to a mechanical cable to run the speedometer.

Works perfectly and is completely adjustable to pretty much any rear ratio and tire size (even MPH or KPH) combo you could imagine.

I set it up and checked it with a GPS unit. And after a little fine tuning (to suit my T56, 3.5 diff ratio and 265/35-18 tires I have it spot on.

Oh, and thier tech support on the phone was good too..I called them on a couple things with getting the speedo in k's just right and about the input signal the unit used. (pcm speedometer output versus speed sensor direct output)
