How do you test SENDER OIL PRESSURE GAUGE IN CLUSTER, also how do you test one on engine block please help?? Cheers

Its always useful to tell us the make and model.

Assuming its a Torana and if LJ/LC/UC, then the resistance of the sender at low oil presssure(at idle and warm) should be ~10 Ohm, when cold/2000rpm/ max pressure res = ~190 Ohm

If LH/LX min oil pressure = 73 Ohm, max = 10 Ohm.

So to test the gauge hook up a dummy resistances to the sender wire(the other end to earth) according to the values above and see if the needle sits on the correct areas of the gauge.

to test the sender check, disconnect the wire to the gauge and meausre the resistance between the terminal of the sender and earth and see if it fits within the specs above.

It may help down the track, , but I've already provided ^ the info/specs you need to test the oil pressure gauge and sensor for any torana, follow the specs for the LJ. Unlike the LH/X where all the gauges and sendors are of the same resistance readings and faults can be found simply by swapping over the sender leads etc, the LJs are all different.

You will need a multimeter and some resistors, or ideally a 0- 200 Ohm pot.

Hi i have measured resistance today it was only 50....
what happen today when i am about to start car temperature gauge goes to full and when engine is runing it flicks forwards and backwards.... i will get new oil preesure gauge sensor monday and i will see what happens then...once more thanks for your advice and i will keep you up to date cheers

Resistance of the oil pressure was 50 Ohms, engine running?hot/cold?idle? if so that is within the operating specs of the sensor and would indicate perhaps the sensor is working, but did you compare it with when the engine wasnt running, higher rpm etc?

Oil pressure senders are relatively expensive, be best to trouble shoot rather than replace and pray.

If other gauges are doing strange things, then there could be an earthing problem between the instrument cluster and the metal of the car body.

Thanks for quick reply here, it was 50 when it was cold and hot i didnt measure when engine was runing when i was looking at gauge it was reading only 10 on pressure gauge hope this info helps..hope to hear from you thanks

if the reading on the sensor was 50 Ohm at cold idle and 10Ohms when stopped then that would be enough indication for the moment that the problem lies elsewhere.

it was 10 ohms cold and hot needle on gauge was showing 10 psi pressure only.....looks like i realy have to have good look if problem lies elsewhere once again thanks....

Dean,

Just, got the dash and the motor rebuilt. got new oil pressure sender and can send you the reference if you want. it's a gtr 72. you need to make sure that the dash gauge and the sender are compliant.

i can put you in touch with the guy here if you need help.

Pm me or call 0401816661. grant

i paid not much, it's cheaper than an auto electician !
