Hydraulic throw out bearing

For those interested in doing away with there with the big dellow or CRS slave cylinder on the side of there bellhousing the Quarter master 721 series hydraulic release is the correct size for the M20/21 gear box tube,

I brought one as Im going to a TKO box and just out of interest I tried it on my old M21 and its a perfect fit.

Im also going to use one of these and do a under dash master cylinder conversion

Nemo, is that the style of under dash unit mal woods and the likes use? i'd love a good look at one in position

The malwoods set up is a whole pedal and pedal box and uses a BA Falcon master cylinder, the master cylinder is a lot like the one from wilwood.

I was thinking of using a BA cylinder but at around $250 for just the master cylinder the wilwood set up works out better on the pocket.

I havnt ordered the cylinder yet as I need to work out if I need a 3/4 inch or 13/16 cylinder.

Will post pics of how I go mounting it But dont hold your breath waiting as I really busy and is not high on the to do list, But I will be doing it as part of the TKO conversion.


Will also post a pic of the hydraulic release bearing on a M21 when I get time to get into the shed

Interesting, I used a Tilton Muncie setup on an Aussie 4 speed years ago but had to cut down an old bearing retainer to adapt it as the input shaft is so much longer on the V8 Aussie boxes

This is on a M21, would need spacing up towards the pressure plate more but nothing head about setting it up for a aussie box

Today I finally got the time to do my under dash master cylinder.

Here are some pics of the TKO and hydrualic throw out bearing bolted up tp the motor and of the under dash master cylinder, pretty easy realy there is plenty of room above the steering colum.

Got another one of those Tilton bearings for my Muncie recently:

Price is a bit silly and they no longer have decent length hydraulic lines but its a massive improvement on any fork actuated setup. I'm still using it with the angled HR style 1" master with the stroke drastically shortened via pushrod mounting alterations.

Where are you planning on putting the reservoir?

close to ignition switch but no where near touching, works out a very good fit.
Reqiures a small trim on the front part of the hand brake mech to clear the front bolt.

Only had a quick look as to where to mount the fluid cylinder, most likely where the old CRS master cylinder mounted to clean up the butcher hole tha is there.

Wilwood 260-5920 Master Cylinder Aluminum Natural .813 in. Bore Universal
Thats the part number for a 13/16 cylinder, you can get that style cylinder from 5/8 to over 1 inch

Any one doing this use a 3/4 inch cylinder, I went 13/16 and my clutch was over throwing and had to limit pedal travel by bolting a block to my floor under the carpet.

Was advised I need a 3/4 inch master with 1.5 inch stroke, the wilwoods cyinders only have a stroke of 1.1 inch hence going up a size in cylinder.

3/4 1.1 inch would of been plenty

Here's how it was done in my Mustang, you have to shim up the bearing to the right distance so it travels where it should when you hit the pedal, my mechanic also welded on an adjustable bolt and striker plate to prevent it travelling further, in case.
