G'day all,

Let me pick your brains.

I'm changing my LJ 3 speed manual to a 4 speed all aussie. What has to be done?

Made a list of what I think is required and if I've missed anything jump in and let me know (not in any order).

1. 3 speed gearbox out 4 speed gearbox in. (presume bellhouse, gearbox crossmember and mount the same)
2. Cut hole in floor to accept 4 speed shifter
3. Change speedo gear drive only.
4. Remove gear linkages tube from around steering column
5. Swap column shifter for full shroud.
6. Tail shaft, Looks like the length is the same but yoke is bigger. (can someone confirm this?)
7. Remove column shift linkages next to rat trap.

I noticed a electrical plug at the rear of the base of steering column, what would that be for?

Heres the 3 speed prop shaft with the yoke out of a 4 speed I had. 4 speed is longer and wider, is this correct?

Thanks
Marty

That be the reverse lights switch, you need to plumb these wires to the reverse lever switch on the 4 speed box.

Torana 6cyl 3spd and 4spd tail shaft and yoke are the same. The wider and longer one may be a V8 or 1 tonner yoke.

It was a 3 speed manual, why would it have an inhibitor switch?

Excellent, I was expecting them to be different. I'll send it in for new uni's and a balance.
At some stage I need dimensions and hole position for the new shifter in the tunnel, so if you have a genuine hole available I'd love a drawn picture with measurements. Also a photo of your hole. Keep it clean

6cyl ones, your memory is good! And 6cyl Powerglide too.

When you cut the hole, cut it exactly the same as a factory one, with the little cut off corners, and drill the 4 x holes. That way all factory stuff will fit. Drill the reverse switch hole in the tunnel at the same time (if LC/J has it).

Thanks rodomo but I'm after an exact measurement of the hole with the curved corners, presuming that is the original shape?
Here is a pic of my hump, is there anyone in Perth with a genuine hole exposed. I would like to trace it!
There might even be someone kind enough to do a trace using the two handbrake bolt holes and the indents further up the tunnel and send it to me?

Hoping someone can help out soon.

Cheers

Cheers, I'll mark it out using that then get the radius from elsewhere hopefully. What side is the radius corners on? Driver or Passenger?

I came across a GTR last week and took some measurements and pics.

The hole was off centre to the passenger side but I must admit I'm not confident with by how much. I think it's 37mm as per pic. When I got home I couldn't quite understand my markings on the paper. :banghead:
