How do you remove locating dowel ?

How do you get those little dowels out of the block? The ones that fit into the head and also bell housing.

I've quickly tried with vice grips but that soon chews them up.

Hi Gene,
I've seen them out when they machine a deck, not sure what tool they have to yank'em out.
I'm actually using an old block as an anvil and they're in the way.

I'll probably just cut them off seeing it doesn't matter about the damage.
