Hi Guys,

I'm having trouble taking out the linkages and shifter assembly at the top of my LJ 3 speed. I am converting the car to 4 speed so wish to remove the excess bits.
This is as far as I can get at the top end. I can turn the shifter assemble but it just wont clear to come off.

and stuck on removing nylon bush at the bottom.

The only way I can see to get the bottom bush out is to bend the metal of the column out. Just don't want to break anything that I might need.

Must be someone out there who's done this?

You've already removed the lower steering shaft bush from the gearshift control tube. The nylon bush type thing you can see in your pic is the 1st and reverse lower shift lever retainer. There should be another one above the 2nd & 3rd gear lower shift lever. To get the nylon shift lever retainers out you need to remove the lower shift levers and to get the shift levers out you need to remove the gearshift control tube.

Quoting from the LC workshop manual:-

From the lower end of the steering jacket bend up 2nd & 3rd shift lever retainer locking tab sufficient to clear the 2nd & 3rd shift lever retainer tab.

Rotate 2nd & 3rd shift lever retainer to the right of the tab in the steering jacket.

Rotate the lower shift levers clockwise so that the key-way slots in the levers and the slot in the 2nd & 3rd shift lever retainer are all in line.

Carefully remove the gearshift control tube through the top end of the column.

Remove the 2nd & 3rd lower shift lever, spacer, retainer and 1st & reverse lower shift lever and retainer.

Remove gearshift lower control spring.

Thanks SPack,
My manual said to remove the retainer but doesn't mention how. Unless item 21 is the bending up of the tube end.

Item 21 in your manual is referring to the wire clip that retains the lower steering shaft bearing adaptor and bearing. The instructions in your book have been lifted from a HQ shop manual and are not entirely correct for the LJ column shift steering column.

Just checking that your thinking what I am.

So bend this part of column (pink line) back so the nylon whatever can be removed then all the selectors can come out?

NO.
There is a rectangular tab pressed into the wall of the column jacket that retains the 2nd & 3rd lower shift lever nylon retainer (the one closest to the firewall mtg plate). You need to find this tab and prise it up & away from the nylon retainer to allow the retainer to be turned to the right in the column jacket.

The lower shift lever nylon retainers are removed up and out of the upper end of the column jacket not the bottom end.

I just went out to the shed and found this underneath of how I had the column mounted in the vice.
Lift tab indicated and turn retainer?

Thanks again, I thought this was going to go unanswered.

Yes, that's the tab.

On second thoughts the nylon retainers probably come out via the lower shift lever opening in the column jacket, not up and out the top.
Only ever pulled apart a three on the tree column once and that was a long time ago.

Done, tricky sucker that one.

Yep lift the tab marked with the pink arrow, rotate the nylon bush of the upper selector then keep the bush held in that spot and turn the selector back and the tube popped out (spring loaded). The tube and one nylon bush comes out the top and the rest is rotated and removed from the bottom.

Thanks SPack.

Also helped reading the LC info in my manual rather than the LJ.
