Since I have just stripped the guts out of my 3 speed column I now need a diagram of how it should look for a 4 speed. My parts book only has this poxy effort, anyone got something better.

Note: must be 4 speed without all the gear linkages on the end.

Thanks for this pic Woosha,
I'm still confused.....this diagram still shows the shift control tube. Why? Do all columns have the control tube?
My diagram shows no tube but is a crappy pic which doesn't make it easy to assemble.
Anyone else have a diagram preferable with the parts layed out?

Thanks again

Hi Marty

The pic Woosha posted is from the LC workshop manual. Seems they just cheated a little with the drawings and modified a column shift drawing for the floor shift type. The steering columns to suit with floor shift don't have the gear change tube and the lower shaft bearing is different.

Best to work from the pic you have from the LJ parts book. It appears that GMH didn't see a need to draw up detailed exploded views of all the column parts and how they go together. I've never been able to find any diagrams that are more detailed than what you already have when it comes to the complete steering column.

Are you planning on using an original type nylon lower shaft bearing or doing a conversion to a ball race bearing?

Cheers
Dave.

Hi Dave,
Yeah Woosha mentioned it was from an LC manual.
I'm open to suggestions on which is better/easier, bearing or bush. On mine the area the lower bush sits has cut outs for the gear linkages, I presume they aren't on the 4 speed model. I might have to weld a wrap of metal around the bottom?
Really like my cars to look original as possible.

Does anyone have a pic of this bearing/bush section?

Cheers
Marty

You could cut the bottom end piece off a 4cyl column jacket (if you can find one) and graft it onto your 6 cyl column

Anyway, have read of this to start with.

Thanks Dave, good info and great pic's of the bush in there.
I have stumbled on a damaged manual housing which I plan to cut the lower section off and weld onto mine. Then machine or smooth out my lower shaft section, (pitted) and make up a bush to suit while still using the original retaining clip.
Apart from less holes in the floor shift tube, it's actually shorter aswell.

this is from the LJ shop manual supplement... perhaps a HQ workshop manual may be of assistance ??
