G'day everyone,

my front seats have a cardboard backing that can be removed to gain access to inside the seat.  I have also seen LJ seats without this.  What's going on?  Is mine wrong or do they vary?

Cheers

Marty

That scares me. These seats have been modified from what I can see it is just the headrest has been cut and welded to the frame and covered as one. Are there any seats that have a board on the back which these could be from?

Don't worry Marty, put up some better pics of your seats, esp the tilt forward mechanism, but I'm sure they will be LJ seats.

It was probably easier for the upholsterer to make up and fit backing boards than do them the original way because of the integrated head rests.

LH, LX and UC Torana had backing boards on the backrests.

Would you

You'd have to ask the person who re-trimmed those seats, however as I said in a previous post, it may have been thought easier to install the new seat covers that way because the seats have had the headrests welded to the top of the frames.

My LC 2 Door S had a broken Drivers Seat which is why I got it Cheap, and all I did was, pull the Vinyl up and re-weld the tin frame work. Dave I

id be almost saying same thing as aldo... tho take a pic of the whole seat..

The problem is that some may have missed is if thats a pic of the backrest on the front seat then there is an issue

You cant see the springs... feel around where that hession is and see if you can feel any.. doesnt mean if cant be put back to original if the rest is original..

Ok, let's sort this out. Just been out to the shed with a sharp knife and shredded it. Now give me your opinions. Thanks guys. I do have a pair of 4 door seats for spare parts. Can these be saved?

Definitely LJ or LC seats Marty.  Pretty sure motor trimmers can buy lengths of replacement spring and bend up new ones to suit.

Boomfunk will know for sure.

yes you can make the springs.. to be hoenst i dont know if it be cheaper to get a different set or use the ones you have.. keeping  in mind what will they charge you for the spring and foam work..

And what would another set cost.. and if you can find

Interesting set up.. id also be looking further and how the bracket at attached to the base.. if it screws on like normal then they were original 2 door seats..

I cant work out what is going on with that head rest..

Yes they are 2 dr seats, you can see the fold forward lever in this pic. The adjustable head restraints have simply been welded to the top of the backrest frame to turn them into high back bucket seats.

Looking at those pics, I suspect the original metal work at the top of the backrest frame that had the holes for mounting the head restraint height adjustment plastic guides has been removed, or these were originally LC low back bucket seats.

The holes are still there for the headrests. Just a matter of cutting the welded rods off. Even if I found another set of seats I'd really want new foam anyway so best to rebuild these in my opinion. Boomfunk, if I give the seat frames and new seat trim covers to an upholster can they generally work with that? Need to repaint and zinc the visible bits before retrimming.

I would suss the trimmer out first.. some of the things i seen around the place.. do as much work as you can.. it will save you.

I understand they have the 2 door brackets.. but that means nothing in hill billy world.. they cut and shut things.. oh ive seen it, ive had some here that were cut and shut.. brackets are correct but just be sure that you can see where it screws to the base that they are like factory

Also find some photo's on the net of really good ones and print them out and take the photo's with you and tell them they need to look like this..

alot of people bring me photo's and it helps when there is no pattern to go by and no foam...

Thanks Boomfunk, totally stripped the seat and it looks factory. I'll get/take photos and also leave a four door seat for reference and parts. Cheers Marty
