Hi, I am interested in original Sprintmaster mags fitted to LJ XU-1s. Is there a difference between the 72 & 73 wheels? Are there markings on the wheel and where are they? I have a 73 car and am concerned I might have 72 Sprintmasters. Just trying to get it correct.

Were these wheels factory fitted or dealer fitted? If they are dealer fitted, would this make them non-factory original?

Thanks, Bruce

There are the Self Locating Sprintmasters that came out on the 1972 LJ XU-1's they released 100 sets in June 1972 and 100 sets in Nov 1972, they are the Holy Grail of the Sprintmasters.

There are some early stamped 1973 Sprintmasters that are rare as well and the others are just Sprintmasters, the rare 1972 ones are date stamped on back

Unless I'm mistaken looks like the early June 72 wheel, should be self locating.

So, a 7/73 XU-1 could have 72 dated Sprintmasters from the factory?

Aren't they all date stamped on the back? My 74 ones were.

Self locators have raised "stamping" date codes, kinda like the one above in your pic, bit too blurry to make out.

Easiest way to tell, where studs go through wheel there is a step. I.e not straight all the way. I'll troll through my Photobucket and post a pic if no one beats me to it.

Ta....to me "self locating" would tend to suggest that when the wheel is put on the studs /and or, the nuts are wound in, it self centres " by itself" .....is that what happens?

I would say it would have early stamped 1973 sprintmasters on it, I think they are feb 1973 sprintys, 73 in a circle or two circles I think and two dots meaning Feb of 73

The wheel in your picture is date stamped June 72, 72 in the circle & 6 dots meaning June. This is from the first batch of sprintmasters originally produced for the XU1 V8. Is the wheel stud hole smaller on the inside of the wheel than the outside. This would indicate self locating, which they should be.

This is a magnesium rim but the small stud holes are the same as 72 and 73 self locating Sprintmasters:
