Hi, I know LJ GTRs came out with the engine number prefix of JL but is this a standard red six or or is it special? I know the QL motors for the HQs were standard.
Thanks, Bruce

I had a parts car with one in it, four door S and have seen several other cars with them too. Unfortunately the LJ GTR didn't get a 'special' GTR engine like the LC GTR did (161S & 173S) but the capacity of the standard JL 202 would have still made them quite quick in the day I would assume.

L in red motor means the same regardless of what it is in, JL, HL, GL, FL, QL, 11QL, XQL, ZL, VL, XZL. All mean high compression 202. The only one with any sort of "performance" claim might be a QL or XQL or ZL or XZL or FL from an auto ADR27A Holden, Torana or Bedford, these had a fair few more kW than their manual sister engine due to a bigger cam.

I have a JL prefix engine is there a range in numbers for Gtr
Yep, approx anywhere between JL66XXX and JL46XXXX could have been fitted to a GTR.

Any JL could have been from a GTR, just like any HL could have been from and SL/R or most QL could have been from a Sandman. I wouldn't waste your time, effort and money though chasing one as any QL or GL or FL or HL etc 202 will be the same. If you find one cheap use it. but it will make bugger all difference to the car if you do or don't use one UNLESS it is the original engine for the car, and even then only if it is a GTR. Conversely as you have one see if you can find what car it came from, and if it is from a GTR see if the car is out there still but missing its engine - in this circumstance the block is valuable. Otherwise just use it.

What does 27 H 3 stamped on the side of the block mean.

Nothing if it is stamped, it has been added at some stage. If it is cast into the side it means 27th August 1973 or 1983 for a Holden 6
