Hi gang, want to chat with someone who runs the original GTR carbie on the 202. That's the single barrel sromberg.

I'd like to see some pics and check on the performance.  I think this is a rare set-up and there might be a good reason for it, as in gutless?????  I need to start making some horsepower decisions.

Cheers

Marty

A  WW of an LC with a GTR air filter , wouldn't look to out of place , they were big enough for a 253 , so it should help it along .

I have a WW on manifold but it's not quite the right one, I think it's off a V8 and some of the choke etc is wrong and missing.  I have a GTR air cleaner but only for the single stromberg so that's another issue.  Then the accelerator rods are set-up different too.

I'm not after speed, just a reliable cruiser that can smoke the tyres in 3 gears    :-)  just kiddin'

I'd like to get it registered as original with the single then play with mods later if required.

So anyone know someone here who runs a single on the 202?????

The only advice I can offer is, a mate of mine had (until it got T-boned) a 1973 LJ Torana S with a bog stock factory fitted JL 202, M20 4spd and 3.08 diff.

That thing used to haul ass quite nicely but it did start to run out of puff at around two needle thicknesses past 100 MPH on the standard speedo.

Cheers

Dave.

Any of these any good to you Marty?

I know none of them say LJ GTR but I'm sure it wasn't unique to them?

What's the point of driving a gutless Torana, I think you need to have plenty of torque to enjoy. It doesn't mean you have to drive like a ratbag though, especially if you like having a licence. I understand that you want to keep it looking original. I've had a 202 LJ with a 350 Holley that went well enough, if you want a single carby that's the way to go. Otherwise you'll want probably 6 of the single barrel Strombergs when you see how small they look.

Sorry it's just that I'm used to looking at triple Webers. Maybe use a single carb for the rego inspection and then try some of the other options.

Hi Marty,

Been trying to find under the bonnet shots of an original 1973 LJ GTR  but all are XU1's with Tripples.

But I did find your other thread:-

I wouldn't exactly call a stock 202 LJ Torana gutless. The stock 202 provided sufficient low down torque and power to provide plenty of spirited motoring in a light weight car like the LJ, it just lacked top end mumbo.

I have driven a S model LJ for over 100,000 miles and can tell you if you go to the trouble of getting a 186S WW Stomberg and not a 253 Stomberg, if used in a moderately enhanced engine you will be able to attain speeds well in excess of the speed limit in any state ( 180kmh ) and if driven sensibly can get up to 30 miles per gallon on the highway. By no means a slug!

I have driven one XU-1 that did very much dissapoint me with its poor performance ( it all about how you set them up )

A big cam is not the only answer.

A big cam and a large four barrel may mean good top end, but can also mean no bottom end performance.

I also have a GTR which has moderate internal changes with a stock can and can easily and quickly reach 160 kmh.

in this case a balance, large valves, slightly higher compression and a HJ inlet manafold, 1 9/ 32 inch venturi single carbie and compact header type extractors is all that is reguired.   ( It is no slug )

I consider that GTR's are getting much rarer than XU-1's and fakers, I would not consider changing mine any more, and will probably remove the extractors some day to make it more original.

Please keep your original carbie and manafold as they may be a bit different to the stock ones anyway as my inlet manafold has an X cast into it, which is not present on any other stock manafold I have seen ( and I have seen lots )

Mike.

I found a beautiful example at ToranaFest and took many pics for reference.  This car was built by a forum member and is a real credit to him.

This was the only LJ GTR with single carb there, very rare.

From speaking to drivers of these cars I feel the power and drivability is what I'm after, even happy to leave the stock manifold on.
