I like the 2 door sedan. Maybe not as practical as the others but I've always liked that look.

Haha yeah mate. Been a bit preoccupied lately. I like the mods you've made there EunUCh. The only other thing I'd still want to change is the shut line of the hatch.
At the moment I'm probably more interested to see how Gong's widened torana build comes along. But if someone decides to build something like this and wants a bit of design or drawing input, I'm happy to contribute.

Hmm, what would a 4 door hatchback look like?

Fair enough John. Keen to see it once you do get back back onto it.
StephenSLR, thats not a bad idea... I've got some time to kill today while I wait to fly home from overseas so might do some sketches of that.

Forgetting the shut line argument for a moment, that is really impressive.
But its a slippery slope from there to ....

Last year, jeez, work, work, sick, work, sick, sleep, work, sick sick sick sick, work work work work sick end.
Thanks heaps mick74lh for your thoughts on this matter, and efforts creating some images for the cause.
This one is based on an LH/LX vs Opel Kadett aka TD Gemmy.
Two door, Convos, flares, fat tyres, chrome bars etc. carried over from the Torry.
Hybrid doors, reasonably lengthened rear end with extended sills / quarter panel-work.
Started tinkering with extending the blackouts back from the bonnet / guards and creasing the body accordingly but CBFd for the results, quite like the look as it is anyway.
Wheelbase is untouched - standard 4 door LH/LX sedan, works well to end up as two door.
Side windows are all Gem, as is the door mirror, tailgate obviously. Fuel filler deleted. Door handles are Torana.
Modified Gem tail light lenses but too low res with the starting images to get freaky with detail there.
I think a drop tank, set of dump pipes and modded lenses would / will probably really help stop it from looking like such a fat Sumo Gemmy. Tail lights will be quite crucial to things and stock Torry units wont do IMO they have the opposite effect, too much like a mutant sedan .

That looks shit hot. I like that. The proportions are perfect. The only thing I disagree on is regarding the Torana taillights but each to their own.

Ah glad you like it man, thanks for the feedback : )
We can agree to disagree with the tail lights, but the fact that you have already sketched out a rear 3/4 view kinda means you automatically win that one for the time being. heheh. I would like to see the differences with/without blackout paintwork but yeh, my opinions mean little without suggesting an alternative layout with decent 3/4 angle pics etc such as you have done.
The tailgate kinda chops them in half with your green/black one. That doesn't bother me but if you stop on the side of the road at night and pop the tailgate; people / traffic etc. will have your tail lights and probably reflectors taken out of view, which may be an issue on freeways and so on. There must be some lame, boring safety / tech reason why manufacturers shy away from housing lamps in the tailgate itself. Food for thought i guess.
Visually I'm sure I could grow to like the layout, but if it's all just up in the impossible open, may as well lash out and have some fun with it.
In my mind, they would be safe / legal - whatever that means, be able to hold their own whether or not surrounded by blackouts, and be based on the same styling but turned 90 degrees and with a third lateral 'slat' for reverse lights.
I'll try sketch some ideas out anyway. It's all a bit of a blank page just talking about it.
I did have a look for the aforementioned SM Expression Session, but so far have not been able to find. I have mags going back to 1998 so it's easy to get a bit lost / distracted etc. but I am sure it will turn up at some point. The article leaned towards sedan-delivery style panel van designs, but the proportions were all kept pretty tight and everything was nicely rendered. They plonked WB ute lights on the back I think. The notes from the engineer regarding the project potential are probably of some value. I also wouldn't mind finding the one they did of the LC LJ hot rods, I know a guy started to build one years ago but unsure if he still has it or got the thing finished.

The split tail lights make the whole project for me, they identify this as a Torana at first glance. If you went with Commodore or Gemini or WB rear lights it'd just look like a weird Commodore or Gemini or Holden wagon from behind, not a custom Torana.
Sure you could keep the entire existing panel and shorten the tailgate but it would be stupid to design a station wagon without flat floor loading, that's just being lazy I reckon.
But I take the point above re the safety aspect, since we're customizing the tail lights anyway, would it be possible to have one whole "bar" as the blinker and the other as a tail/brake light with four bulbs, ie divide the light horizontally instead of vertically? That way you still have a fixed marker lamp and possibly hazard lamps on both sides even if the tailgate is up. Would this still look 'Torana-ish' enough?

I agree that horizontal adjustments could be the way to fly. (forgive the devastating pun, must be that time of the arvo.)
So long as we don't end up like this rig we'll be fine -
haha good gawd, sorry about that^, in it's defence there is also value in knowing what NOT to do. (IMHO) crashed into the fugly tree pretty hard that ride. Poor thing, deary me.

Not a huge fan of 4 door hatchbacks and will be steering clear of this direction also, IMO -
For the LC / LJ heads, search keywords - Opel Ascona A Voyage
The back ends on these appear slapped together and the sharpness / funky lines are a bit much for my liking, reminds me of the Chev Lumina and not in a good way, have not bothered to check if they are actually much the same thing CBFd.
^ Looks weird rear 3/4 but prob a useful reference. I prefer the Kadett / Gemmy ones over these.

I think the 'Chevy Vega 2-door imported from the States/Rusty UC Hatchback converted to LX front' would be the go.

It looks very good.
The Torana windowline is pretty low so you could use the door and existing panel as most of the rear quarter and use Gemini or custom side glass ?

Heheh, reminds me of an idea from a couple years ago; which is (breifly) -
That every single thing in the world / universe /etcetera verse could actually be expanding and growing and just getting absolutely huge, or shrinking and condensing and compacting down all at once, or a combination of the two, like breathing or something, and so long as every object maintained it's proportions in (mostly) all directions, you would have absolutely no way of knowing about it, or being able to even tell if such things are happening or not.
So I guess, if the entire universe can do it (expand in all directions) without anyone even noticing, it can be done, just not by me, or anyone I can afford to pay for such a service.
People talk, but I think it's more than enough to say that there are two clear paths to this dragon, an old way (destructive, best friends with a welder, cut n shut, one build only) and a newer way (shutup Henry Ford) using aerospace grade alloys, CFRP, polycarbonates, clays, RTV silicones, urethanes, AutoCAD, SoldWorks, Internet Forums etc. to build the car in a way that is creative and results in a factory with which to simply and quickly build more of them.
Not to get ahead of myself, but I have been toying with the idea for about 12 years, and it's great to be able to play around with things again recently. I can use PS now but way back then I actually spotted the right combination of magazine pics, angles, and 'expanded in all directions' attributes, to be able to do a chop by hand with a pencil and tracing paper (didn't wreck the magazine and add some lovely Torry parts to a Gem wagon and have it sit right. I coloured the picture in, and held onto it for years, whereabouts unknown at this time tho, so it's nice to be able to move on.
I remember the start of the internet, and since then, sweet frOck all Gem wagon pics have surfaced in my search engines, and I check often.
The pic used to chop this one I have been doing at the moment - One is an LX / LX 4 door, the other is actually an Open Kadett. I have only been smashing foreign language sites and raiding whatever pics I can find as a recent thing, inspired by this thread to check the world and see if it has been built already and some of us freaks could just import some and be done with it.
It's funny, because you say (Heath) that the Gem is good, less Commo is always great (I agree, don't we all?) but yeh, complete lack of decent pictures online meant that this one was made from an Opel, and all Commos are tweaked Opels that I suspect have always had surgery done to make them less freaking ugly heaps of shit they start out as. GM did not modify the appearance of the Gem, but every Commo has been facelifted from the word go.
The Torana is quite unique obviously so yeh, moving on -

I reckon the Gemini bits could be made to work. I believe the rear screen in a Gemini panel van is almost a match for a VB-VL Commy wagon rear screen.
