Ben Stewart has launched his Holden Historical Services site. Ben notes:-

The Holden car is 65 years old on 29/11/13. It has reached a very significant milestone - retirement age in the GM corporation. It is appropriate to celebrate the occasion.

Here is my contribution to the big day. At long last I have finally done it!

Enjoy.

More than interesting! For Holden vehicles this is a service that will far exceed the stuff Holden has been providing for a while now, but only for totally original Holden cars at this stage. It os something that has been missing and necessary for a long while now.

It was launched with the full intention of it only being available for Holdens at this stage. I did predict to Ben that he'd better get ready for a tsunami of Torana and some Sunbird requests, and I guess that if he truly is interested in getting some financial return from the 30 years or so of data and information collection then he'd be wise to consider doing the reports for Toranas too. Remember this is a labour of love for the Holden, especially the Monaro that drives Ben. So with any luck he may relent and do them for Toranas, but totally his call. I guess Brad will be one of the first to tell us yay or nay!

I knew he'd like your car! I spoke to him about it when i'd originally offered to come to a deal of some sort for my red GTS327.

Hi,
So assuming the guy running this, determines he will do Toranas as well....what could you expect in the report, that the VIN disk
doesnt tell you?

or , is it more about finding the info you DONT have, if you are missing a tag or two?

Sounds like a good service?

Hahahahahahaha!!!!! And that deal will forever play in the back of my mind....

Yeah Im just getting one just for something else to pop in the glovebox. I think I know most of my cars history in terms of build details. But you never know, something extra might just pop up. Ill let you all know once I get my report.

Hi

Yep, waiting with bated breath. Perhaps the fabled "colour and trim database" has been unearthed.

Cheers

At this stage Col it is Service/Warranty records but remember not all a car's info is in those records like BODY number on most vehicles, and you can only assess that number as correct (or in some cases more importantly not correct) if you have a huge volume of real world cars recorded so you can either state that it aligns OK, or if you have cracked the number sequences which is possible in some cases.

The only Service/Warranty records that are generally available to the public are the LC-LJ ones. The HQ-HZ and LH-UC stuff is not available.

Such info isn't fable, it did exist at one stage in some form and it may still. It won't be colour/trim records though, there is no reason that I can think of for GMH to bother with that. It will be in the form of production records if it ever turns up. Hopefully it will be in paper form and not computer records as I think we'd have trouble reading old computer tape today if it has even survived in readable form! Or if the operating system to read it exists!

No it has always existed for HQ-HZ (or some of it anyway), and Holden has it. However they long ago forgot how to read it and interpret it properly, hence why their letters are less than perfect today. This applies equally to Torana as well. This allows a person to get the info off their car checked to be all as built, and have a letter to prove it, without it telling them for example their HQ SS is a V8 Belmont sedan with low compression 253 and M22 transmission. Plus Holden have no way to know if the chassis number is correct or not.

Col, Ben states on his website that he needs all the info from all ID Tags.

Quote: We require all details as appearing on all ID plates as well as any identification in the vehicle bodyshell before a VPR can be generated.

This sort of thing happened years ago when no one had access to the vin disc for the LC/LJ Toranas. Information was being sold until the VIN disc was leaked out. Must be exciting times for some Holden owners to possibly find out engine number for their particular car and selling dealer etc. I hope there maybe some new light shed on LC/LJ but I am a bit sceptical on that as yet. Will just have to wait and see.

I've asked if I can get the info without the VIN tag or original engine number which I don't have for my car.

If I can get that info for $90 it will be well worth it.

I suspect your skepticism may be warranted Dave.
