Modern Motor Sept 1983

Barry Lake

writes a nice story in MM Magazine here, the story's of 3-Pink V8 Prototypes very interesting, same as Custom Rodder reported in there mag there was maybe 3, as Modern Holden person who I spoke to said they were returned back to 6 Cyl and used as Engineering Hacks and Vanished, Not Destroyed.

hey AL,
you need to get a tent and start camping outside Holden.
When they turn out the lights in a few years, be the first one over the fence and storm the archived Dept.

There MUST be SOME doco still there that relates to this....will let you sleep easy at night .

Imagine finding that info !

There you go big W, wheel yourself in there and offer your services since you are laid up. I'm sure it will be beneficial to all.

Ray Borrett had a bit to do with that Torana, he said it was the Experimental Engineering L34 Torana, so not sure REDA9X if it was a SLR5000, but saying that the L34 is a beefed up SLR5000 any way.

People who were up at the 1973 Bathurst weekend and in the Pit area that's where the HDT boys were parked, would of seen the Lone o Ranger LJ GTR V8 Prototype, so the Orange one was seen there and at Phillip Island in 1974 that we know of, there was a Pink LJ parked behind the Lone o Ranger LJ GTR V8 Prototype inside Bathurst Motors on the 1973 Bathurst weekend, so maybe the Pink one was seen that weekend as well, I have a mate that seen the White LJ GTR V8 Prototype near GMH Salmon street Port Melbourne, it had broke down and the GMH Service Garage Manager was Driving it, and a truck from GMH was coming to pick it up, this was in 1972 some time.

The 'H' tells a story in his Torana Magazine, he tried to find the Yellow LC HDT XU-1 V8 Prototype (KSN116) with no luck, so who knows if that is still around

Yes, but an L34 is built as an L34 from the factory and tagged as such, this started life as an SLR5000.

So the SLR5000 has become a L34 prototype as stated above......no?

LH16 was an LH L34 prototype built from the ground up in Engineering. It would never have been sold to the public unless as scrap metal.

Following start of production, there was a yellow production L34 in the Engineering Fleet for a period of time. The engine was damaged by an over eager employee and a std 308V8 installed for normal fleet use. That would have eventually been sold as an ex Engineering vehicle ( or it could have ended up at a race team? ) There was another that L34 that came up for sale in the company fleet and was bought by 2 mechanics from Engineering. Don't know the history of that vehicle but it may have been a display car for HDT? I imagine the L34 guys will know details of that one if it still exists.

LH16

Has a PSN Tag on it in the Picture, meaning it would be on the LH Warranty Disc List, who ever has that Disc might be able to work it out, I doubt it would of been destroyed, Example's  Saggy Sarah HDT LC XU1 is still alive, The Lone o Ranger LJ GTR V8 Prototype was Tendered off and the HQ Yellow Monaro  350Z (Both on the same tender sheet) they were Sold, and on the same Tender sheet there is the HQ Sandman 350 V8 Prototype Ute (Eweit or what ever it was called) Vic rego number LGL400 (Firemist  Silver/Black Colour) was Sold as well
