aaw come on Bomber.....at least give me 4/10 for trying....

Sorry mate i missed this, wasnt having a go at you, your squiggly lines are probably fine, i know dick all about wires and electrical juice and the like.

I was meaning i seriously doubt the whole two speed idea will fis Jacob's issues.

Cheers.

Could some how wire in a resistor wire of a heater fan (yellow coil/spring wire) i know my Hj has one, and just have a relay setup to go from that the resister wire to full 12v

Why not just wire in a SPAL FAN CONTROLLER or similar that can control both fans, when they turn on/off etc ,That's what I plan on doing

While Im here= last week I drove the Torana to work, it was a 38 degree day( 308,Twin Au Fans,Aluminium radiator) at the moment the fans are just triggered by the usual sensor in the top tank, so the fans are either off or on at full speed!. Car runs fine temp wise for about 15 mins or so ,then after the temp gets to 90 and the fans kick on,they bring the temp down to about 81 and then stay going the whole drive home as they cant take the temp down to the 75 degree mark where the fans kick off.

Is this normal for hot day driving or can something be done so that the fans are not going the whole time...

Not practical really. Would need to mount it in a ventilated enclosure so it cannot short out on anything.

Spal controller, yes.

You need a thermo switch that triggers the fans on and off at higher temps.

90 deg on and 75 deg off is too low for your normal running temp of 81 deg C.

Sounds like your cut off temp should be somewhere around 87 deg C minimum and cut in temp approx 10 deg C above that.

To be honest its not overheating, its just getting hot. But then again i haven't actually driven it yet properly to see it overheat. It did spew a bit of water out of the overflow when i got to the roadworthy joint, and then again at home. But, the probe was not set up yet. After setting up the probe in the top hose and running the engine with a digital thermometer to adjust it, i found that the temp was spiking at times and siting idle around 95, before dropping very slowly. In essence the fans were on for 3 minutes off for 1, instead of on for 1 minute, off for 3, if that makes sense. I still think they need a shroud as they are pushing a lot of air out the gaps[/quote]

Just reading pushing air out of the gaps? What side are your fans mounted?
Mite be silly. But have you got your positive and negative on the wrong side pushing air backwards to the front of the car. Or are the sucking air from through the radiator?

Mounted on the front of the radiator behind the grill, drawing air from outside into the engine bay. And they are the right polarity.

I had a thread on my cars running hot problem a while ago,I changed Water Pump,Radiator, fitted a Radiator Filter,Toyota Coolant, you name it!, when I had a higher rated Thermo Fan Swich inplace my cars fans were pretty much running all the time for some reason?.

Guys on here were saying the  opening temp rating on my Thermostat was too close to the  opening rating on my thermo fan switch, after trying a few combo's the current set up was the only configuration that allowed the fans to actually kick on and off?!.

vt v8 use twin thermo fans with 4 wire motors, 2 powers 2 grounds.

run both powers from fans to a fused battery 12 volts, the grounds split, 1 ground from each fan are switched by a relay(each relay has one ground from each fan), 2 relays total.

with one relay on fans run low speed, with 2 relays on they run high speed.

this might be helpful

Alls good. Just wasnt sure if this had been covered. I Have seen some odd things when it comes to electrical.
Id look at 2x12v digital temp controllers that way u can set them individually what ever to whatever temps needed.
There pritty cheap on ebay from the orientals, I have used many of them with none faulting as yet.

If you don't have a dual high/low temp switch then you could use just a normal temp switch to drive a relay to switch between speeds.

Second wiring diagram looks good.

The first one on the last page was no good.

What it lacked was the fact that you need both fans running the same direction. They are polarity conscious.

My idea about one fan continuous and one at hight speed is simple.

One relay triggered by the ignition power runs the first fan.

Then when it gets up to temp your existing thermo triggers the second relay and turns on second fan.

When temp drops the second fan cuts out.

You can run 2 fans in series and they will have half the voltage ie 6volts supplied to each fan.

They will probably run somewhat slower than half speed though.

hi rob...I'd be thinking the fans in my scrawl do go the same direction as each other, regardless of the relay being in or out.
But take the point that running stuff on 1/2 voltage is not real smart....just answering the orig question

Sorry about that Col.

Went past it too quick.

You are most certainly correct.

I had two fans on my car one on a temp sensor the other I could switch manually from temp sensor to on or off, simple worked for 20 years and never had a issue, if I knew it was going to get hot turn on second fan, or off for normal driving I found one fan on sensor was fine 99.99% of the time, even idling in traffic jams for 30 minutes or more, but then in NZ temps rarely get above 30 C
