As above would anyone have a shaft out or laying around they would be able to run a tape measure over

 

Have an issue with the shaft not protruding through the bottom bearing on re assembly

I don't think the shear pin has gone but just need to confirm

 

Seem to remember a thread on a problem similar to this but cant seem to find it

as it happens, i have 3 on the bench at present. One complete refurb, one in the middle of recon and one standard.

 

You won't like my answer.

 

I have 3 measurements !!

 

from end to end longest is 920mm, shortest is 905 mm

 

None of the three have free movement between the 2 pieces.

 

When i pulled the young blokes column apart in his LH , which had a hard front rh hit at some stage that bent the column , the centre shaft pieces were easily moved in / out by 50 mm.

I need another 20mm for it to be completely through the lower

 

Doing my head in as to why  - it was fine when it come apart

Tried to pull it apart but nowt movement

Looks like you assembled the top end of the column correctly so the only logical conclusion, if you are using the original shaft and column jacket, is your shaft has collapsed. You say in your 1st post the shaft was protruding through the lower bearing when you dismantled the column but on reassembly the shaft is now too short. At some stage in the rebuild you may have inadvertently collapsed the shaft and not noticed. The sheer pins may have already been broken before you pulled it apart.

Will compare them to what i have tonight - it's the black wires i have the issue with

Nice read - havn't seen devilsadvocate on here for a while

Will be sticking with what Mr Holden put there though with maybe just a dust cover over the bearing protruding to keep the grease in and the sh!t

Mark you havn't got an earth location point for the two blacks have you

Presume looking at them and the length of them it is the same point

 

Short one from the clip is earth for the dash

Long is from the switch

yep, the long one earths to the column itself. Phillips head screw half way up the column. I'll gete a pick and i'll confirm the earth loc on the short one when i get home.

Hi Guys, 

 

I am re-fitting my steering column and am finding that the mount which fits the column up to the dash is too short and does not line up with the bolt holes. I thought it may have been due to my column being collapsed so I put an old steering wheel on and wacked it with a hammer a few times to try and extend the column...(which I think it did) as now the upper bearing that fits in the coffee pot has moved forward and is currently out of the housing. BUT...the column and bracket did not move with it and I'm confused to why it is short? Where  could I have I lost length in this? could it be from the length of shaft that is pushed into the flexible coupling? I am pretty confused...

To move the entire outer column further inside/outside the firewall un-do all three bolts and twist the whole thing using the mounting bracket as a handle, a little lube on the rubber firewall grommet helps (e.g. a touch of spray on CRC). At least one (if not all depending on how much movement you need) of the unis in the engine bay will also need to be loose to allow the inner column to move with it.

 

If you just need to move the bracket a little relative to the outer column, there is a bit of a slot in the holes where it bolts to the column, un-do those and slide it up or down.

ah yep, I thought I might have to undo the uni's...which will likely mean removing the cotter pins again...

Sweet! that did the trick...had to slide those shims down ever so slightly but we're good!
