As you probably tell from my nickname, i own an LX.
I currently drive an EB Falcon and am having major issues.... mechanically, because its a ford, and morally because Fords eat balls......
Anyway, i want to sell the EB (on gas) to who ever wants to buy it and then purchase an LJ grandpa car for myself as an everyday driver.....
This is why i want to know if there is an LJ (factory) with a four cylinder in it.... i figure its prolly good for economy if its a four....as holden 6's are notorious for being thirsty...
Also, if anyone knows of a nice grandpa LJ (im talking blinds in the back, stockie rims, the whole deal) let me know.....
Cheers,
SXCLX

Was a pain in the arse!
Issues,
1/ Vauxhall engine, leaked more oil than an old Triumph. Even after a complete engine o/haul.
2/ Vauxhall gearbox, shift always came out with the plastic nut & the shift tube came loose.
3/ If you remove the tailshaft, don't lose the spacer at the diff yoke.
4/ 2 different 1300 engines, different crank journals, locally only one readily known, the small journal version. I had the large version, ran a bearing, took 4 weeks to find a second hand rod by dismantling dozens of engines at every wrecker that had a motor and a couple more to find a set of bearings the correct size.
5/ Pressure plate is a stepped design, the flywheel needs a dimension of .498th (1/2") most people grind the friction surface and dont do the top to keep the spec, a new clutch will slip! This spec is not in any documentation or manuals; I got it from a fairly old guy that was working for Repco at the time.
Other than that, was a good car for the missus to do the shopping in.
That was 21 odd years ago, maybe they are better now? Matured? I wouldn't have another one myself.
English Vauxhall (Viva) built and rebadged to Torana, could be wrong, but pretty sure this is correct.
The Scientific publications manual that I still have gives acknowledgment to Vauxhall for their input.

LX2DR is correct, all the 4 cyl engines in HB/LC/LJ/TA Toranas are Vauxhalls, not Opels. The only Opel motor in a Torana is the 1900 motor in LH, LX & early UC Toranas & Sunbirds.
The HB Torana was just a rebadged Viva, with round headlights fitted. The LC/LJ/TA 4 cyls were the same basic car, with the new Australian LC body used from the firewall back. The larger 1600 & 1760 OHC motors were added in mid-LC & mid-LJ respectively.
Leaked more oil than a Triumph, that is saying someting, but your probably right.

I was realy methodical when i rebuilt it, made sure all the gaskets overlapped and sealant on all joints.
But the bastard of a thing still leaked, was the most frustrating engine i have worked on, cleaned it up and piled on the silicon and sold it while it was clean, never been happier to see a car go, never to be seen again.

Same theory for the 2L Ford engines in Cortinas and Escorts.
