Hi everyone, I am thinking about putting a turbo on my 186 but I have no idea where to even begin, so I thought I'd start this thread, and I thought it would be quite interesting for others as well. So lets get started!

My first question is can I run triple webers with a turbo, I kind of want to stay away from feul injection but its not out of the question.

Next question, do you have to do anything to the block or head.

Photos would be great too.

Thanks all.

Bit of a minefield here
To answer your first question
No to triple webers
As to the rest of your questions
These are my views and I'm sure many others will have different views
VK injection set up would be the best, not using that, a single side draft feeding the turbo would work
You will need to reduce your static compression ratio, there many ways to do this
Big valves, but not a lot of cam overlap, you can buy turbo cams

First question is, how much are you looking to spend?

You can do what you like Glenn,

Doesn't mean, It would work will efficiently:-

1 - have 3 small turbo's, one for each Weber

2 - in the old day's, they put a decompression spacer under the head

Couldn't find any Triple's with a turbo/s, so yours would be the first, very complicated, but could look symmetrical. Dave I

Well maybe injection is the way to go then, I just didnt like the idea of efi, seemed too hard.

I dont have heaps of money, just a broke ass torana owner. But I do have time. So I can do most things but not too expensive if you know what I mean.

I like the sound of vk injection, tell me more. Sounds like a wreckers might have something.

Thanks

Blue / Black 202 head, there's some big valve ones on ebay but the standard one would probably be ok if you don't want a monster. 202 pistons. Early steel crank if possible and Starfire rods. VK injection manifold, maybe look around for other suitable injectors, mild turbo type cam, decent brand of computer. Second hand Supra or Skyline intercooler. Second hand hi-flowed VL snail maybe. Spend most of your money on a good custom manifold and computer and you could have a pretty quick and reliable car fairly cheaply.

Or go Red head, old school turbo kit and water injection.

The first way would be my choice.

Where's Bomber ?

Yes you can run the webers... all 3 of them

But you need to build them to suit turbo application

This is a weber design injection system but the basic principal of airbox etc is the same as you'd run with weber carbs

Initial outlay to set up a decent power turbo'd Holden 6 is rather large...but when put into perspective of HP v's $'s, a well set up turbocharged engine will always make more power that an N/A engine of similar dollar value per HP.

I'm wayyyyy too deep into mine to change my mind now, I dont really want to count how many $'s I've sunk into it...but I'd estimate between the $4,000-$5,000 mark from carb to sump with all the turbo bolt on's. When I finally get around to screwing the forged engine together oneday,I WILL NOT be counting the cookies it will take to get it up and running.

There's a few cast pistoned Torana's (LC and LJ's) getting about these days that reel off consistant flat 11's and 11.2 second 1/4 miles and are street driven to the track and back...I think one rather well known LJ Torana in Tassie has just cracked a 10.9 with a possible 10.6 in it.

HI, I was thinking of bolting up my turbo kit onto my lx but now I hear about the new NCOP rules. Has anyone been through this procedure yet?

Is it still do-able or too hard? I am in queensland,Brisbane area.

Where's Bomber ?

.

Bomber is staying way away from this.

No offence intended to the op, but this subject has been covered numberous times here, including a few threads on basic throw togethers for very little money, and im sick of repeating myself, and subsequently getting into the same arguements and repeating them as well.

What i will say to Glenhailstone, is buy this book.

http://www.amazon.co...e/dp/0837601606

Read it three times. Its old, and a bit outdated, but still the most relevant thing i can find.

Cheers.

thanks dave, there is a lot of reading and opinions there but I guess I will have to ring an engineer to get the facts on the legals. It looks like the fun police have taken over again!! I like to go trailriding so I am used to all the guvment rules and regs crap.As for the original topic, like Bomber suggested,a bit more information is needed before going down the major modification road.

Actually the NCOP is a lot better layed out, easyer to follow and more lenient than the old QCOP.

Going by the QCOP the largest Holden six you could turbocharge or supercharge in a LC/LJ was a 161, but under NCOP you can have a 202.

Its a good easy to read document, i suggest you take the time.

I've read it twice.

Cheers.

thanks bomber, but I was told the emission control parts were a bit of a head%$@# !

Just sounds like they are trying to make it waaayy too hard and hope that we just go away.

Is there a particular chapter I should read first?

I might contact a couple of guys in my area and see what they think,as its their balls on the line. haha.

Read the first chapter first...

Funny thing about the emmissions chapter, its null and void in QLD atm due to lack of testing stations.

Dont believe what your mates at the pub tell you, read it for yourself.

I"d also recommend reading it for yourself before contacting anyone.

Few local lads still havnt caught up, one even told me to my face that "QLD has not and will never accept the NCOP" When i pointed out we have had it for over 12 months he politely informed me i best not be seeking him for future mod plates/road worthy's.

Its good to know what the rules say before talking to them, you might get the wrong clown.

Cheers.

Hi bomber, yes I understand your reluctance as there are already threads. But trying to sort all the relevant info from the unrelated is difficult. Already this thread has strayed from my original topic. Hahaha if I didnt laugh I would have to cry. lol

Where is the best place to look at getting the parts like manifolds, exhaust to turbo adaptors and stuff.

Thanks again

Honestly the cheapest way to do it would be to grab a RB25DET front cut... can get them for around 2k and has the ecu, wiring, injection manifold, turbo manifold, turbo, turbo oil lines, turbo water lines and the motor is built for the turbo... I recently fitted one to a E36 BMW and made 340rwhp without touching the motor (just larger turbo) And you say you have the spare time so that can go into making the engine mounts, g/box mount and sump mods if your half decent with a welder and grinder

But if you prefer to keep things all holden and would like to go injection you will need:

Injection manifold (can use a VK one)
Possibly larger injectors? If you can find out what cc stock VK injectors are I can tell you how much power they will support

Second hand turbo's can be had for $200 or so... just abit of a gamble.... A GT28 would be a decent choice since it will be a pretty stock motor

Exhaust manifold will have to be custom made unless you can find a old strata kit to modify
EFI fuel pump $150

A return fuel line to the tank

ebay intercooler will do $150

Intercooler piping will need to be made

ECU, Haltech Sprint 500 is just over $1000 or a Megasquirt is $600

Will need to either lock the dizzy and use it as a trigger or its sometimes easier and always better to just set up a crank trigger, can get the parts for $150 then just need to work out how to attach it. Then could use coil packs in wasted spark

Weld a oil return line onto the sump

turbo oil and water lines $200-300

Custom dump pipe and exhaust

Not sure what stock 202 compression is, but 8:1 would be a decent aim

Pump 15psi in and it Might hold together and you might just make 200-250rwhp
