Best way to increase oil flow 186

Hello all! heres one for all you red six nuts!

 

I have read oldjohnos bit on getting more volume of oil to run through the lovely motor. There are two options internal and external.

 

With the external option, he doesn't say exactly where to put the hole in the cover, and although it is pictured, a more elaborate explanation of its location in the pump cover plate would be nice. Also what happens when it goes through the oil sump.

 

And any other thoughts.

It goes in the front cover opposing the inlet hole in the back of the pump, the one that goes from the block to the oil pickup. 

 

Common sence will dictate where to put it. 

 

And in the sump, it just needs some kinda pickup. This is what i did:

While i remember, not picktured, but i welded a bit of 25x3mm flat bar on its edge between the bck of the sump and the pickup to stop it from vibrating.

Awesome, Thanks guys!.

 

Now, this is an after thought after I have just had my engine rebuilt! And I believe I need to open out some of the holes in the block, and blank one off.

 

I thought if I drill so the swarf falls down and not into the engine I might get away with it, and then vacuum it out. aghhhh I know this should have been done when I just had the block.

i have drilled the 2 pictured above, and plugged the pick up hole but not at the top where it goes to the pump, but im still a while off going together so cant report on the performance. 

 

if i were in your shoes, i would be pulling it apart, drill the holes, also do the ones in the mains as described in OJ's write up and give the block a good wash out and whack it back together



best taking a little more time/care than rushing it and paying for it later

I agree with Stinga too Glenn,

I have drilled a lot of holes, and a lot of on the job ones, and it doesn't matter how hard you try too catch all metal pieces, you will not win.

Also, another thing is, is that this is cast material, and will have a lot of grain metal dust material from drilling, which will destroy bearings. Dave I

I didn't get measurements, but can if you wish. I use an old gasket as guide, ignore the crap on the 1st pic, this didn't have the fitting pointing in the right direction.Attached File  IMG_20140517_182542.jpg   182.14K   16 downloads

Is it worth taking it apart again and drilling it, or just putting the external oil line in without drilling the block.

Before we go any further, is there any particular reason you wish to go external?

 

Only reason i did is because i didnt have any room left in the sump with the girdle.

No point without the far left and right hand new inputs Glenn,

 

But, has anybody said this improves the system, I would also add, that where is the pressure and were is it not,

 so with an unknown territory, I would have gauges at each area drilled first to see the pressures, before putting lines to connect them together to see the before and after.

Another thing they say, is to have radius's at the drilling end , so you can only do that when it is apart. Dave I

Thanks, no, the sump is factory. I just thought after reading oldjohnos write up, that it would be better to have a larger volume of oil. But if its not critical I could leave it.

I have always run the original type setup with galleries opened up etc. but the current motor revs harder so I wanted to keep an eye on the contents of the sump so I fitted an external pickup line so I could fit an pump screen that I can check from time to time to see whats floating around the sump.

Silicone the dip stick in.
Take the oil cap off.
Fill until it runs out the top of the rocker cover.

Problem solved. :spoton:
