I am in the process of trying to get my LH Torana changed from NSW rego to WA rego and have hit a little snag. The low beam is blown on the left hand head lamp and the sealed beam needs to be replaced. Easy just buy a new one. Wrong! Coventrys no longer stock genuine rectangular Torana headlights and say that they do not do a H4 conversion of the exact size. Rare spares said to try Coventrys.
Has anyone replaced a rectangular style headlight recently with an new one? If so where did you buy it from?
Has anyone done a H4 conversion on the rectangular headlights? If so can you supply me with any details on where you got the kit from?
If all else fails is there anyone in Perth that has a second hand one that they want to get rid of?
Cheers for your help

i cant find who sold them to me, but they where some indian brandname
pretty good, and they are a lot better light than from the old sealed beams
i cant remeber which model, but one of the v series (i think) has the same rectangular headlights as the lh, and there is a mob in melbourne that do sell them, just be prepared to pay for the privelage.
you still have two options though, buy a sealed beam from the wreckers ( cost about $10), or convert to the more available lx round headlights, which H4 conversions can be bought from a lot of places.
I just didnt want this, cause i like the rectangular lights.
maybe someone else could shed some light on the valiant that shares these lights
cheers

there are two very similar rectangular headlights
one is th torana/valiant that obviously fit perfectly.
the other ones are from mainly toyotas (MR2. Hilux) and dont quite fit
they are shallower, and flatter, and dont really look right

Classic and Vintage bulbs
(look in the monthly jumble specials)
The lights are on special at the moment and are $20 each. H4's to fit are $12 for 55/60W and $14 for 55/100W. Postage to Western Australia was $12. When they have arrived and I've had a chance to check them out I will let you know about the Quality.
Cheers everyone for your help and hopefully this information may help some of you.

When we took the U/S light into Coventrys to try and get a new light the rectangular lights listed in the Hella and Narva books were a slightly different size. From memory the LH light is 122 X 188mm amd all the ones listed are not quite the same size.

enderwigginau I was measuring the frame that retains the headlight into its housing. The measurments I gave you were within a couple of mm's and the 2006 Hella and Narva light catalogues don't list this size light.
The H4 conversion lights that I ordered from Classic and Vintage Bulbs arrrived about 3-4 days after I ordered them and turned out to be a fairly good product. The lights were an exact fit but there were a few little differences in the globe and park light setup. The original plug for the sealed beam would not fit over the new H4 globe holder. I did not want to chop the plug up so I pulled the wires out of the Torana plug and fitted a plug off a late model car.
The park light globe holder was fitted into the back of the new lights by filing a couple of small cut outs into to hole in the back of the light. The globe holder then fitted in and locked into place and is probably better than original.
The overall quality of the lights is pretty good and I would recommend them.
One last thing, the style of H4 globe is not your standard run of the mill H4 globe. It is the H4 globe with the small locating bumps and not the locating tabs. Can still be bought from Coventrys etc but maybe not your highway roadhouse.
I hope this helps some of you
Cheers

In case you werent aware, if you use over 75W per lamp on high or low beam, you are going beyond the rating of the switch and wiring.

I just got 3 of these globes frome the bloke at classic and vintage, $48 all up, including postage, and it saves me scouring the shelves around town to find some.
I run 55/60w, and i basically made a whole new loom, with relays, and put new headlight plugs in.
The reason for this was so that if i wasnt happy with them, i could always bump it up to 100 or so watts, and not worry about frying anything.

I also set up a headlight aiming chart on the door of the shed, and aimed the headlights as per the service manual
This made a hell of a lot of difference as well.
Anyhooo
the parkers in my lights where already there, so i just go a couple of globes for them.
cheers

shit, i forgot to put in the measurements, but the book is in the shed.
i will put it on here tomorrow night, but if you follow it, you wont regret it

the horizontal centre line on the chart needs to placed 7.5 m from the headlights, on a level plane, at a height the same as the centre of the headlight(if that makes sense),
and the vertical line needs to be placed in line with the centre line of the car.
you will obviously need to scale this
i did it with some masking tape on the front of the shed, at it was all sweet
cheers

Not a hard job to rewire and put relays in, and i reckon to this day every cent i spent on those lights was worth it
