Hi guys, got this old but new alt which has a stained pulley. How do I go about removing it so I can get it re-plated? I have put it in vice and restricted pulley from turning but now the nut and shaft turn? Thanks. Martyvaruzuma.jpg

Hit it with some penetrene.

You will probably now have to pull it apart.

Remove the rear bearing. Clamp the shaft and try again.

Do not try to stop it turning by clamping the rotor.

You will cause irreversible damage doing that.

Probably need to take the rear cover off, pull out the central shaft and secure it somehow.

Hi

If you have access to a rattle gun - use that. No need to clamp anything.

Cheers

Doubt a rattle gun will do much good.

The shaft will still spin.

Rattle gun will work, at high pressure, please not don't use high pressure to re tension or you will strip

Absolutely - I have done this many times and I understand that this is how it is done in the industry. Hand tighten though.

Surprised me. Thought a rattle gun had to have pressure to rattle against. Not something free spinning.

We're all learning here Rob, I did apply a little pressure from my boot to the fan while rattlin'

Knew there had to be some resistance somewhere.

Makes more sense now.

Hi

Nope - no resistance needed. It's called an "impact wrench" for a reason. It's all in the physics of inertia.

Cheers

Didnt work without some resistance.

Straight on it just spun the alternator.

Didnt take much to get it off though.

Just a screwdriver in the blades.

May be my cheap rattle gun though.

Next Question. How do you tighten it by hand without the shaft spinning?

just did one yesterday arvo, for my brothers boat anchor 253 commodore, the gilmer belt ate the first alternator, this second alternator failure happened when one of the long screw that hold the two halves together came out introduced itself to the alternator fan(the white alternator is the busted one)
