My LX seems to be plagued with clutch judder, I had it with the M21 and now with the Supra 5 speed.

Just wondering if it's just bad luck or could my driving style or even components I chose be somehow causing it?

I recall after putting in a 2.78 diff I had great issues taking off and it would judder like crazy when taking off, when I put a 3.55 in I found out the 2.78 was an EH style diff with different uni, they mechanic was surprised how that lasted as long as it did. I replaced the clutch at the same time.  I had a heavy duty clutch put in that resulted in snapped cables and upon putting in the Supra box they found the fork was also bent.

It's probably done 30,000 km on this clutch and I'm wondering if that's a bit early to be experiencing judder, it only happens on take off, the pedal now bites really low, there's very slight movement off the floor for it to engage and I find myself having to rev it higher to get it to engage smoother.

I currently have it in a workshop and they're checking it out, will have to see what the issue is this time.

What type of compound is the clutch plate?

Should last longer than that..they should wear down to the rivets.

Even an uneven tune can cause a similar problem in some cases.

Oil on the friction surfaces, riding the clutch to much, crook engine or trans mounts or as already mentioned pressure plate can cause "clutch shudder". If you've busted a couple of cables & bent a fork, the clutch is to heavy for the set up. Talk someone that specialises in clutches, they can adjust the pressure plate to suit your application, not just take one of the shelf. I've had good results from Western Clutches at St Marys. http://westernclutch.com.au/

Thanks, my car is currently at Diff Technics and Con gets his clutches from Western Clutch.

I had the bent fork on the previous m21 set up, from memory, I think they may even have used the same pressure plate when the Supra was put in; if possible?

I was thinking of this kit from Sunbury Brakes.

Any thoughts?

Hello Stephen,

The 2.78 Diff makes the Clutch work harder,

so if you are still using the same clutch as before,

it is more than likely being the old habit wear and tear.

Hope the New Clutch works well for you.

Thanks, that explains it, that old clutch must've been on it's way out before I put in that diff.

 Thank's Stephen,

Another thing comes to Mind,

is that a V8 Clutch is much Bigger than the Little 6 one,

so the clutch is under even more strain,

now the 1 Tonner Clutch is bigger for the 6 cyl,

not sure if that helps, but size does matter.

Thanks, that explains it, that old clutch must've been on it's way out before I put in that diff.

The Sunbury one is significantly cheaper; also on ebay.

If the picture is correct the Sunbury one has a 4 spring clutch, no spigot bush either.

No idea, I'll have to see what Western Clutch are offering, price, etc. and weigh it all up.  Con at Diff Technics said to wait until he sees what's wrong with it, my guess is I need a new kit, it'll be great news if I don't.

The Sunbury clutch kits are painted bright green.

This was also a 6 springer.

If you look close you can see it through the fingers.

Old mechanic mate of mine told me years ago.

If you pull the gearbox out always replace the clutch and pressure plate.

Whether it needs it or not.

Saves pulling it out again later to do it.

We hear you Rob,

I put a new clutch and pressure plate in on the Engine change 4 months ago in my WB Tonner,

while we were there already, easy as hey.

If you pull the gearbox out always replace the clutch and pressure plate.

New spigot bush too
