G'day all, How the heck do you fit a new rares firewall grommet to the speedo cable? Stretching that little hole over that thick end will bring a tear to my eye. Marty.

If it's new it should stretch over it without breaking...with plenty of lube

If all else fails Marty you could cut the grommet , fit to cable, then glue back together with 406 loctite .

Marty if the KY doesn't work, then go and see these guys http://www.fdrive.co...contacts/wa.php they can remove an end slip on the rubber and then crimp on a new fitting.

Rares should sell these with the rubber on.

Thanks Gents, I'll give some of these ideas a shot.  Except wasting my KY.

You would be surprised to see what rubbers can be slipped over.

I put on a new old stock one i had,boiling water and grease,too remove and too refit it.

On another note,and its a softer compound rubber,so you know.

That's Correct John,

 

In my experience,

 

these Rubber materials are made so they can stretch over to do the job.

 

 

So an after market Grommet should be made of a material to do this.

Went to Rares and Les had already made contact with them to let them know I was coming in.

Don't know how he knew what store I go to? There solutions were, Cut and glue or try hot water at your own risk. OR buy a complete cable from us. I've ordered a new one. (Didn't know they sold them).

 

 

 

But not one to let a bit of hole stretching stop me, I had a go. Firstly lube up my hole stretcher.

 

 

That was too short so out with the extension bar.

That wasn't thick enough, so get the thicker bar out and grease that up too.

The hole was getting a bit floppy by now. Stretched that on. By transferring from one to the other.

 

 

Getting to maximum stretch before tearing. Ouch!

 

 

Then to transfer to the cable.

 

 

The final wrestle.

 

 

All done with no damage apart from a loose hole.

Hopefully like humans this will shrink back to normal after no use.

I reckon it'll be a cut & glue job, or cut & join every wire...

The Rare's grommets seem very hard to me, not very pliable at all.

Done, just removed the connectors and a bit of rubber grease.

Very good. Looks like I'll have to remove my connectors again.
But doesn't the grommet need to go past the 1st join there? So the harness can head off to the left side of the engine bay?

How soft is the grommet, mine is barely pliable.

Hi Tony, this was quite soft, unlike the speedo grommet I never put this one in boiling water. 

The next challenge is getting it in the firewall hole.

Did you use the rares harness wrap for the harness? That's about where I'm up to.

I've used it on some other sections but not happy with the look of it, so I'll just clean up the original stuff. Rares stuff looks too shiney.
