New LJ Heater cable

This cable is under heaps of pressure when pushing closed. Works fine when pulling but tends to bend wire at the controller under dash when pushed.
Mine was bent so I straightened it and lubricated the wire but it still binds on the push stroke.
I feel to give this system any chance of working the cable and wire must be 100%.
Is there anyone who makes these or can make then better?
Cheers

The bent cable is only a consequence of the real problem.

My top three reasons are:
Stiff mechanism on top of heater box.
Cable route wrong.
Cable binding in casing.
I think I have cable binding issue plus having been bent before on previous heater box.
Cable feels oxidized and rough and maybe cutting into outer sheath.

One of these might help lubricate the whole cable length internally.

My top three reasons are:
Stiff mechanism on top of heater box - most likely cause is stiff operation of components inside heater box.
Cable route wrong - pretty much only one way to route the cable from the control unit to the heater box in engine bay.
Cable binding in casing - possibly
I think I have cable binding issue plus having been bent before on previous heater box - once the cable is bent it will never work properly again.
Cable feels oxidized and rough and maybe cutting into outer sheath - could be grit ingested into the cable and casing.
Pull test in both directions of lever on top of the heater box should not exceed 4.75lb of force to operate the flaps inside the box.
GMH did not resolve this cable bending issue until heater units produced from the 1/11/1973.

Has anyone tried putting a spring on the heater box lever to make it easier to push?
Once the cable has been bent it will be easier to bend again. See what fdrive have as Rodmo suggested.

Having said that, a smart bloke could probably make that pretty easily using an after market choke or bonnet cable?

Firstly made a jig to give me correct length and diameter or curled wire ends. Used timber with fixings for curling wire around.
Got some wire from a lawn mower shop, it's 1.4mm compared to original 1.15mm but still slides freely through original casing.
Curled it around pins.
Fitted and tested and I think it's a winner. Should be stronger too.
So keep those old broken casings cause they can be saved.

Well done, good result.

As always an excellent result Marty.
What might seem like a small change in wire diameter now represents a set-up 220% stronger in bending (ceteris paribus).
What was GMH's solution beyond 1/11/1973?

They modified this part.

Wow! I did a mod to that piece without even realising it was a factory change in late 73.
Yes you did Marty, however you did go a tad further than GMH did

Hi Aleks, not sure how you worked out that percentage and where those big words come from.
But Yeah! it feels a lot stronger.

Hi Mario,
This has been very successful for me so far.
Well worth doing. :-)
