It is time to fit front and rear glass in my hatchback.

I'd read a number of threads before abouts issues with new versions sold by Rare Spares and others - rubbers fitting properly, the mylar locking strips being incorrect in width and profile and thereby not fitting wither the rubber nor the corner trim pieces.

http://www.gmh-toran...p-installation/

http://www.gmh-toran...e-spares-again/

http://www.gmh-toran...dscreen-rubber/

http://www.gmh-toran...locking-pieces/

Much of the threads suggested you needed to find some OEM mylar locking strip if you wanted a decent job.  Whilst Festa said he had rolls of the stuff, my search hasn;t been all that successful - probably easier to find the Beaumont children...

There is a multitude of threads on this forum but many are now dated and I take into account something said by Dr Terry in one of them only a few days ago;

'Many rubber kits (including Rares) weren't that great years ago, but they have improved over time'.

http://www.gmh-toran.../75272-rubbers/

I saw Barry (Pop's-SS) aske a similar question in Aug 2014 but unfortunately not reply or update:

'...has anyone found a good supplier with a good product...'

http://www.gmh-toran...window-rubbers/

And so, I am chasing some definitive and contemporary advice/experience from folks who have done this jobbie of late please, simply: What brand rubbers and mylar locking strips compliment each other, allow for OEM corner pieces to fit well and do the best job?

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

Cheers, TB

I'm happy with the RSP rubbers, NOS Mylar and good condition GMH corner pieces that I fitted.

Thanks Brad,

I read your threads/posts and as you suggest, referencing your photo (below - OEM/NOS on left & RSP on right) it all seems reliant on finding OEM/NOS mylar.

Hence my seeking some contemporary advice re: experiences involving re-pro rubbers with re-pro mylar.

I am hoping RSP have amended their mylar given your post was almost two years ago (June 2013).

All the best, TB

I did, and may still have about 20cm of NOS left which I did offer RSP for use in copying. But from memory, no one was really interested.

From memory the last mylar lock strip  i bought was advertised "torana" but after comparing it with the original from LH/X  it was slightly wider across the base or "wing' and was not much fun to fit...just a tad too wide which made it  difficult,i think the strip we get now is from the earlier models and just advertised "suit Torana".

Would have to find the left over bits and measure,i think the "new" one is also a tad higher making for a slight adjustment on the corner pieces ?

I have this but don't know whether it suits RSP seals. The RSP version is still incorrect but fits ok in OEM seals. OEM corner aluminium pieces do not fit well and RSP corner pieces are better shaped but still rubbish. I fitted OEM corner pieces over RSP mylar in OEM seals and am resigned to the fact that this is likely the best I can do.

ZOOK

I have a RSP LC/LJ rear screen seal with OEM Mylar and escutcheons and an OEM NOS front screen seal with OEM Mylar and escutcheons and I can't recall there being any noticeable difference in the degree of difficulty fitting the Mylar to either seal.

Cheers

Dave.

New on right, old on left, new seems slightly more rounded and not as "flat" on top and is a bit higher than the old profile, the difference

in the base is obvious.

Thanks Brad (hanra), EunUCh, Zook and Dave (S pack),

LH SLR 3300 (Matt) sent me a PM and suggested I chase Unclefesta (Joe) for advice - sent him a PM.

In the interim, I pinged RSP and got a reply - strangely it seems replies are not fielded by head office but rather a distributor - Roxburgh Park in my case - bloody strange really - wonder what Les, Edan, et al have to say about that...

Despite the distributor's best efforts no doubt, I would still very much like to speak with the horse's mouth as it were.

Anyways, the distributor suggests the RSP rubbers and mylar match as do their corner trim pieces which are (despite the photo on their website) differing angles for top and bottom.

Appreciate your help and hope to hear from anyone else having attempted this of late.

Regards, TB

I think these were the corner pieces I ended using.

Thanks Brad, that is what I have as well but reportedly the OEM pieces are too flat for the higher curve of the RSP mylar locking strip.

Now that I have learned the angles of the RSP corner pieces have been remedied, I am trying to discern if the profile of the RSP mylar nowadays matches their corner pieces - if so, I think my concerns are pretty much abated.

Cheers, TB

I bought a front and rear screen mylar strip for a LJ. for the race car.

I also had some flebay type of corner pieces. which were advertised as " holden " but were a different shape.

the RSP  mylar and also the corner pieces that came in the RSP  pack MATCHED the profile  but the fle bay ones were a different shape and did not match or come close.

I was pretty happy with the RSP ones. But for a LJ as also get them for the GTR as well.

Thanks to all.

I've mentioned all this in my build thread: http://www.gmh-toran...unknown/page-16

Thought I should record it all here for posterity in order to help anyone else.

I used the RSP rubbbers inc. their mylar locking strips and corner pieces.

Good news, they have been re-profiled and the pieces match their mylar.

The RSP mylar is not OEM in profile - it is more rounded but nevertheless, it all goes together now - seems it was easier for RSP to amend the corner pieces rather than the mylar.

RSP on left and OEM on right.

Profile%20RSP%20L%20OEM%20R_zpstpmp8vog.

RSP%20L%20OEM%20R_zpsrnapod78.jpg

It was suggested to me the RSP mylar profile matches that of the big Holdens of the period and so makes sense, they can make one mylar for all as opposed to two...

Cheers, TB

AFAIK the big Holdens didn't use Mylar insert until the VB Commodore.

The revised (rounded) profile of the RSP LH/LX/UC escutcheons (aluminium corners) appears to better match the LC/LJ Mylar.

Touché. Glad you found a combination that works. Still working my way through your build thread so haven't seen the result installed.
