Hi guys.i have intensions down the track to put a 2 spd glide in the torana s and want to keep it looking old skool as

possible.was going to or still might be using the pistol grip 2 spd hurst shifter and cover the alloy cover the same color as carpet.but tonite on fake book a guy asked did the lc come out with a factory 3sp auto.a guy has mentioned whether the non gts 2 spd is the same, as he has one, and got me thinking .....if it is the same my intensions would change and use that shifter coupled with the 3spd console and just change the white lining for 3 to 2....i dont have any knowledge on the 2 at all, my selector on box is on the lhs is all i know.

would they be the same bar one more shift .i havnt even looked at the tunnel yet to see whether it has a hole for it or not

i dont want to cut it .i aint going there lol

cheers Maz

HK-HG powerglide T-bar shifters are all the same other than the knob/grip. HT-HG trimatic shifters are the same thing too with a different ratchet piece which you can buy repro on Ebay. Obviously the console inserts are different (2spd vs 3spd). These shifters are very hard to get though, especially the switch.

If you want to make it look legit old school, then use a LC/LJ Tri-Matic floor  shifter & console.

It will need mods on the underside, because the Tri-Matic rod is on the RH side, but the Powerglide is on the LH side.

It's do-able & would look great.

thankyou for the info  guys      with the knob yel327 is it Tbar or just bigger knob.this dude reckons his is the same bud as 3spd as the dude with the 3spd put a pic up.whats the switch bud detent or something, im just guessing

Dr Terry with the 3spd it will have one more selection how would i get rid of that .i can get the console and thought it would be easier just to use the hk-ht one if the same...so they are different in appearance

Some use a knob and some use a bar, but it isn't like a HQ-WB style with a button, the shift rod moves across to pickup lugs in the mechanism.

A good HT-HG trimatic or HK-HG powerglide setup with a console will easily fetch $500, maybe as high as $800 especially if it has good original woodgrain on it for GTS, Premier or Brougham. These are far more valuable than Torana stuff as there were desirable auto HK-HG's.

Not sure if its the same as a LC/LJ linkage but the late UC's and WB's had left side linkages, might be able to swap one over?

No, only some Statesmans. Holdens used a rod style shifter, same as LH-LX Torana.

the HQ/HX th400 shifters are different to the trimatics . I bought one for a left hand shift trimatic , couldn't use it because the flat bar that comes from the shifter to the rod was a shorter length . Don't know if you can use it for a glide .

That is news to me, I've used heaps of them and always worked. I've even turned trimatic ones into TH400 ones by simply pushing the roll pins out and swapping the mech around. And used UC left shift trimatic ones on TH400's. And used TH400 ones and swapped over trimatic ones on TH700/4L60. You need to use the right lever on the transmission - you can't use a trimatic length one one a TH400 from memory.

I reckon you could do a similar mod to what yel describes to an LC shifter, swapping the mech from side to side.

You could also weld up the notches in the gate and after careful measuring and marking, file new slots to work for the glide.

It isn't hard at all to swap a HQ-WB/LH-UC rod type shifter over. Just knock 2 x roll pins out and swap all around and put roll pins back in. By wot's reply LC-LJ may be similar.

Don't be too concerned, it isn't from a valuable or desirable car (compared to XU1, GTS327 etc) so use it as you see fit. You paid for it and its yours to do what you want to it!
