Got a tank need to clean out so can weld tank sump & few other mods...the insides of tank covered in 2-3 mm sticky gum residue probably from fuel additives.

 

Filled it water then purged tank twice..lasted about a day before fume smell came back obviously cant weld it in case of a 'boomski'

 

Looks like crap you see on top of an old varajet carby except coated whole inside tank,never seen it one that bad.

 

 

Anyone ever had same issue?

Diesel,molasses or even vinegar worth a go?

Molasses will sort that out

You need something like a degreaser, whilst both vinegar & molasses will it may take a little longer. There is plenty of water based degreaser type products that will clean the tank, Supercheap,Auto1,Repco etc. carry them.

Gene is onto it .Mollasses will get it clean in about a week .Make a bath up and place the tank into it .60 litres mollasses and top it up to 400 with water .Then once it is cleaned up Buy a tank repair kit and finish the job off.I did clean the tank out with water after a week and then put it back in  and left it another 2 .The fuel gauge was a week in the mollasses .

If it is the same crap I had im my tank .My 4500 psi pressure cleaner with turbo lance as well as some extreme solvent degreasers including  gun wash ,castrol solvent degreaser, didnt even look like moving it .PM me if you like with your number and I will talk you through it if you like

Lol Bernie that sounds overkill for couple of backyarders although tub big enough to fit a lc gtr be handy.

 

Barely any rust inside just that sticky crap you have on the f/sender near o-ring seal.

 

Being galvanised will look at water based detergents too.

 

Would buy another tank but usually more damaged than this one.

Another way is to use Caustic Soda, which is available from most hardware stores, just a bit harder to get rid of, it's a bit savage on the lawn.

R.I.P stinky tank.

 

Did the ol' nuts & bolts in tank + lawn mower fuel then do shake shake shakes twice,..little splash out tank killed large section lawn next morning after it rained lol

 

Got rid of pungent stink but yeah was taking too long & never going to 100% clean out residue so dropped it off to radiator joint.

 

Apparently they distorted & popped holes in tank with high pressure wash.

Kerosene will sort it out. Don't bother with degreaser.

It came out ok after a few rinses then pressure washed..wasn't as bad as radiator place said it was....just needs patch on top of tank where all pinholes are.

 

Still has hint of pungence but now fine to weld.
