One of the cars has a small leak from the pinion seal. The centre is of uncertain history but otherwise behaving fine.
Is there any way to tell which seal it has before pulling it apart to fix?

Look up a nine inch diff id chart for which seals fit which, alternatively you can pull the whole pinion assembly out while leaving the rest of the centre in the car. Diff shop can then change the seals and reset the preload without you having to take off a wheel.

Common for the yoke to come loose and the seal will then weep .If that is the case you will most likely have a collapsable spacer in it for setting preload .Spend the $and put a machined spacer and use loctite on the yoke to get it to stop floating around .Older shafts and yokes do have an issue once they get some wear in them
