Hi all.

I am trying to decipher my compliance plates and have a few queries.

8H77LHJ626753C

Question lies on the H - 4 cyl SL
and the L - 202

How can one be a 4cyl and the other 6 cyl?

Also on the model UC8UH77

U & H Are 4 cyl and 4 cyl SL.

Is the car a 4 or 6 cylinder?

Thanks.

I don't see any issue with the VIN code.

The car is a UC Torana SL hatchback that came with std production option A9H (202 HC engine).

The H in the vin is the year 8, so 78 in this case , but its the model year which generally started in October year before. The H has nothing to do with the engine

The U stands for small/ medium size car..H77 stands for sunbird hatchback....if fitted with the L20 engine it becomes torana SL hatchback or sedan..

This is what I can figure out..

L20 M20 GU4

8 =  All Holdens

H = 4 cyl

77 = Hatch

L = 202

H = 1978

J6 = Dandenong

26753 = Production Number Sequence

C = UC

UC = Model

8 = All Holdens

U = 4 cyl

H = 4 cyl SL

77 = Hatch

Just confused as to why it references a 4cyl when engine code is 202 6cyl..

8UH77 = UC SL 3dr Hatchback 4cyl (RPO V5V) however with RPO A9H applied becomes an L6 (202) SL Torana

RPO's are Regular Production Options and when applied to the base model vehicle alter/upgrade it's specification.

V5V is the UC Sunbird (4cyl) SL production option and A9H is the UC Torana (6cyl) SL production option. The 3300 engine was the only engine available with A9H in the 3dr SL Hatchback.

The SL sedan could be had with either the 2850 or 3300 engines.

The confusing thing of course is both models are coded 8UH77. To confuse the issue even further the base model (S) Sunbird 3dr Hatchback is also an 8UH77 as is the base model sedan an 8UH69.

The base model Torana S (6cyl) was coded 8UG69 and 8UG77 respectively but with A9H applied their model codes changed to 8UH69 (SL) and 8UH77 (SL).

At the end of the day it is the L20 (3300 high compression) engine code stamped on the Body ID Plate that confirms your Torana was optioned with RPO A9H.

If anyone has any further clarification or corrections that can be added/made to this subject please contribute.

Cheers

Dave.

All UC's are Sunbirds.
All Sunbirds are 4cyl.
Everyone down the pub knows this as FACT!

Hi Dave.

Yes, UC model codes are not very well done, are they?

In LH it was simple. The codes read as follows:-

REGULAR MODEL RANGE   Torana 1900 S * 8UG69 Torana 1900 SL 8UH69 Torana S (6 Cyl or V8) * 8VB69 Torana SL (6 Cyl or V8) 8VC69 Torana SL/R 8VD69       * = No 'S' badge fitted to car       REGULAR PRODUCTION OPTION PACKAGES Torana SL/R 5000 8VD69 (XU2)     LIMITED PRODUCTION OPTION PACKAGES Torana PLUS 4   8UG69 (A8L) Torana G Pak (I) 8VB69 (XV1) Torana G Pak (II) 8VB69 (XV1) Torana SL/R 5000 L34 8VD69 (XU2 & L34)

LX went:-

REGULAR MODEL RANGE   Torana 1900 S 4 Door sedan * 8UG69 Torana 1900 SL 4 Door sedan 8UH69 Torana 1900 SL 3 Door Hatchback 8UH77 # Torana S (6-Cyl or V8) 4 Door sedan * 8VB69 Torana SL (6-Cyl or V8) 4 Door sedan 8VC69 Torana SL (6-Cyl or V8) 3 Door Hatchback 8VC77 Torana SL/R 4 Door sedan 8VD69 Torana SS 3 Door Hatchback 8VD77         * = No 'S' badge fitted to car # = Export only     REGULAR PRODUCTION OPTION PACKAGES   Holden Sunbird 4 Door sedan 8UH69 (A8Z) Holden Sunbird 3 Door Hatchback 8UH77 (A8Z) Torana SL/R 5000 4 Door sedan 8VD69 (XU2)      LIMITED PRODUCTION OPTION PACKAGES   Torana SL/R 5000 A9X 4 Door sedan 8VD69 (XU2 & A9X) Torana SS A9X 3 Door Hatchback 8VD77 (A9X)     Note:  LX Torana 1900 models were discontinued when Sunbird was released (except export)

But I read UC this way:-

REGULAR MODEL RANGE   Holden Sunbird 4 Door sedan 8UH69 Holden Sunbird 3 Door hatchback 8UH77 Torana S  4 Door sedan * 8UG69      * = No 'S' badge fitted to car   Holden 1.9 Ltr 4 Cyl 'Starfire' OHV engine replaced Opel 1900 4-Cyl CIH engine                             @ Sunbird SL/E release       REGULAR PRODUCTION OPTION PACKAGES Holden Sunbird SL 4 Door sedan 8UH69 (V5V) Holden Sunbird SL 3 Door hatchback 8UH77 (V5V) Holden Sunbird SL/E 4 Door sedan 8UH69 (A8J) Holden Sunbird SL/E 3 Door hatchback 8UH77 (A8J) Holden Sunbird Fashion Pack 4 Door sedan 8UH69 (A8T) Holden Sunbird Fashion Pack 3 Door hatchback 8UH77 (A8T) Torana SL 4 Door sedan 8UH69 (A9H) Torana SL 3 Door hatchback 8UH77 (A9H) Torana SL DeLuxe 4 Door sedan 8UH69 (A9H & V5W) Torana SL DeLuxe 3 Door hatchback 8UH77 (A9H & V5W)     LIMITED PRODUCTION OPTION PACKAGES Holden Sunbird DeLuxe 4 Door sedan 8UH69 (V7A)      Note: UC Toranas not badged as Holdens, however UC Sunbirds were.

Also the letter in the VIN which defines the engine is the 5th letter. In the case of the 8UH77LHxxx VIN, the letter 'L' describes a 202 hi-comp 6-cyl engine.

The codes for the other engines are:-

Y = 1900 Opel 4-cyl

N = 1.9 Starfire 4-cyl

E = 2850 lo-comp 6-cyl

D = 2850 hi-comp 6-cyl

M = 3300 lo-cxomp 6-cyl

Dr Terry

Agree Dr Terry very poorly thought out considering how straight forward the previous Series model codes were.

Yes, the L = 202 in the VIN code. I neglected to mention that, my bad.

Thanks for your input.

Cheers

Dave.

Sorry for the confusing post. I did a 'copy & paste' from my book, which I have in Excel file form, but when I posted it all the words ran together. It makes it very hard to read a table that has been converted to a Word file. It looses a lot in translation.
