The cars that you mentioned here are a different variety to mine then.
The story that got handed down about mine is that the first owner wanted to beat the high insurance costs of a GTR and he knew someone at Holden who said how about if we order you a S model with all these options. Keep in mind that I was told this story about 35 years after the event by the guy who bought it from the original owners grandson (if the information is correct).
So if some of the upgrades on mine are not ones that would have been fitted by the dealer then it must've had a special order placed presumably by the dealer to build it to these specifications, this would make it a SVO wouldn't it.
If the car was ordered by the Dealer to those specifications then it would have been classified as a Retail Sale.

They were common back in the day, they also had the 3300 decal in the fuel cap
I would suggest they weren't that common...It would seem there aren't that many people who are aware of them.

Do you have a link to an advert or a copy of one ?
When you say, "the same as an LJ GTR apart from paint scheme & flutes", what about the suspension & interior trim etc.
Dr Terry
Just to clarify, they were sold around October to December 1973. The ones I know off were a 'GMH special' sold in in Sydney. They were Sunburst 2 doors 82311 with no exterior stainless trim or the usual 'S' or 3300 badges. They had a JL motor with the GTR air cleaner, 4 speed, Sports dash, sports steering wheel, sports wheels. Torana 'S' interior. As I said previously I was contemplating purchasing one from Les Vagg Motors Pennant Hills a suburb of Sydney. One of the apprentices I worked with bought. Apart from the different interior trim, no flutes in the guards and only the black along the sills they looked like a GTR. They were a 'special' probably similar deal to the 'HQ Vacationer'.

No knowedge of these LJs....but did buy a new V8 VH Vacationer in 1984, when the VKs were hitting the ground...so the idea of running out the old bits and pieces at model end as part of a ""special model"" is not uncommon.

Gene, Yes my air box is a work of art, I'd recommend one on any multiple carb set up now that I've done this, fair enough not to use one on an original XU-1 though for the sake of originality.
Personally I don't know of many S models with an unmolested body in this sort of condition, there was a fairly tidy gunmetal grey on at toranafest though.
Here's the boot with only one spare wheel bracket.

And the familiar view inside. Those with a keen eye may spot the rubber sleeve still on the handbrake that's been discussed recently. Disregard the air fuel meter and associated cables on the passenger seat.

Hi Anthony,
Sounds like you've been checking your photos of my cars tags again.
Anyway, it's because the bottom of the drivers seat was showing it's age and was due to be retrimmed, this gave me the opportunity to get them trimmed in the GTR pattern and then I picked up a GTR rear seat and had this retrimmed to match. The GTR style seats is just my personal preference over the std S model seats so that's why I went with that. The original rear seat is still in mint condition and stored away for the time being.
It would've been nice if the GTR style seats were part of the original upgrades fitted to the car during production but that simply wasn't the case.

No James not checking your tags AGAIN............. it can only be 50E because it's a torana s, the best part about your s is the block.

Hi All
Dave's is correct. I have a John A Gilbert LC Torana Stinger, built August 1971. It is a S Model with full GTR interior and running gear. Fully Original.

This jogged my memory. GMH used to do special "Summer" colours, normally 2 or 3. If I remember correctly Sunburst was one of them during HQ. My guess is if there was a fair few LJ's done in that colour they would have been Summer Coloured cars. I can't find the HQ sheet at the moment but here is the HG for Summer 1970-71.
