The rear gearbox seal has started to fling a fair bit of oil around the floor pan in front uni of my car (LJ XU1 - M20/21) the seal would be around 20 years old and from sitting idle during this time would have hardened up I guess, and now I'm driving it a fair bit its started to leak.. Please advise in detail the process of removing this seal and where do I purchase a quality replacement seal?

In the car, I'm presuming ? Firstly, obviously follow a safe jacking procedure. Once everything is secure & safe ! Undo the 4 tails haft nuts on the u bolts, remove tails haft. You can buy pick sets & seal removal tools from either tool shops or Repco ect. Work around the seal in a star type patern opposite to if you're tightening wheel nuts for an example (evenly) so as not to damage the housing where the seal seats around the perimeter. Once out, thoroughly clean the surface where the seal will seat & make sure it's dry. I like to run a wisker of 3 bond number 1, around the outside edge of the seal, just before fitting. Tap it in, in a star patern again & use the like of a socket, to get it to go in square if you don't have any seal installing tools. Once it's home, wipe the excess clean. Install a little rubber grease on the seal where the tailshaft is going to insert, to stop it from being damaged. Install tailshaft tighten the u bolts, safely return the vehicle to the ground after you check the oil level & you're all done. Or seek a Mechanic.

before you replace the seal
check that there is no play in the universal joints(front in particular)
and check the rear bushing in the gearbox is ok.if its not there is a ford bush that is longer that will fit
(Just grab the tailshaft and see if it wobbles about)

Thanks for this great advice. I suspected there would be a trick to removing the old one.
